Just wanting to know from the people in the know what is the best thing to do as my Norton is almost up for renewal.
Renew Norton
Try Trend Micro Peni-cillan
Use a freeby like AVG (been using this on kids pc for years........but has no firewall)
Open to other suggestions too.
Norton does seem to drag the speed down a lot hence the interest in something new.

Another for the AVG !!
Have had no problems since using it about 2 years ago. Norton tended to slow everything down, as it wanted to check for viruses on almost every action.
AVG is FREE, works
well, is easy to use. My Interest Provider has a firewall, and I think Microsoft XP has one as
well - both of which seem to work.
Can definately recommend AVG, but listen to others for the firewall.

I have used many and have settled on a few (I have many computers I own and look after).
On my internet system (a throw away with no personal data) I use AVG-free with ZoneAlarm Pro. I have never had an issue with these other than when downloading files that were suspect to begin with.
On my personal work related system I use a hardware firewall (on my router) with tight security (a real pain) and TM PC-Cillin. PC-C is very effective although it slows things down a bit whilst updating (but much better than Norton which has a large overhead). It also has an effective firewall with intrusion detection.
Your choice but the theme on this thread is AVG and ZA. I agree if the budget is tight!
Don't forget however to include the usual spybot etc if going the free route.
PC-C internet suite has these (as do most suites you purchase).
I miss the old VET as it was very effective. The new system for VET isn't as good as it was. Hence why I went PC-C.
Check the renewal offer for Norton as it may or may not be the cheapest route. If it is and you have the norton suite, it may be the better way for you.
I wouldn't go out and buy it myself and when a system I buy has it I do not keep it, but that is mainly from years of previous experience and it's problems it used to cause. I can't say it still is that way.
Look also at Symantec suite. It works
well. Not sure of cost though.
Sorry for the options but if it just internet and you don't really have private data, then go the free route suggested. They do work
well together and ZA out of the "box" is easy to configure.

Hi Cam,
Just a quick comment regarding VET, now CA (Computer Associates). We use it on all our work computers, our IT company use it on all theirs, so I elected to buy it personally. I think it is fantastic, their Help desk is great and can fix problems externally. I also use their Pest Patrol as
well.
I went of Norton as it was too invasive and took control of the computer.

Hi Phantom,
Yeah I agree. I wasn't bagging VET at all, but felt a little off when they changed the updates and checking method from what I had known and loved.
I am sure it is still a world beater though. It always was.
I haven't really found anyone who has used Full products that actually recommends Norton for their superiority. It is easy to stick with it if that is how your sytem came though. I agree with you about Norton.
I might give them another go as I have some Photo Kiosks running win2k that are open to the public trashing that needs protecting and VET is what used to work
well there. Everything else has been a royal pain to keep updated as it is not on the internet but needs protecting just even more as everyone sticks their things into it and there is no guarantee they are safe.
VET used to allow server distributed updates controlled by the server. Do they still do this?? If so I'm in.
Regards Cam

Cam, I don't know the answer to the server issue. We have all our client machines update automatically but I am sure you could do it through the server.

Cam,
If you are after server distibuted updates check out SAV Corporate edition. This is what I use at work. It's a different ball game to the home version.

Have a look at www.toptenreviews.com to help in your choice.
I like Bitdefender personally, like everyone else in IT I've had horror episodes with all the biggies like Norton, McAFee, VET, Trend
In my opinion, the ones that update hourly are the best. Those that update once a week are not good enough in 2006, as it leaves a week for the gremlins to get in.
Make sure you get something with Firewall nad Spyware and Antivirus.

I am in the business but to be honest you can have problems with Nortons or Trend, I use Trend and it's ok but I don't pay for it. I think the AVG free product seems to be ok. Viruses aren't the problem nowdays, it's Spyware. The freebies like Spybot and Adaware don't work, try Spyware Doctor from PC
Tools and it's an Aussie product. You can do a free scan to see what you have, how serious etc, but you will need to buy the product to remove the nasties.

Trend Micro PC cillin.
And I use mailwasher to check all of my emails on the pop server, deleting those I don't want before down loading. Less likely to get an email virus that way.

G'day Stuart,
Like most of the others I can recommend AVG Anti-Virus and Zone Alarm if you are looking for free protection that works.
I use the above on the Notebook while E-Trust Anti-Virus and CA Personal Firewall products are used on the Desktop.
All products provide a good screen from the baddies. (at present anyway)
There appears to be a bit of a "poetic licence" going on to my way of thinking because when I look at the free Zone Alarm GUI and the way it works, it appears virtually identical to the bought CA Personal Firewall product. The only difference is that the CA product can be customised more, as no doubt Zone Alarm Pro would be.

Hi All,
Have been using Norton since going online but will not be renewing when it comes up. Too slow!
My computer guru suggested using AVG in conjunction with Microsoft Windows Defender, (currently a free download from Microsoft.com).
Seems to work pretty
well for me.

Another vote for AVG combined with Kerio. Kerio goves the advantage you can actually see what is going on if you need to or suspect something is wrong.

Just renewed for a 2 year 3 user licence with Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security 2007 for $129.95 downloaded and installed off the web site. Works good for me!
Had I known you were in the market i would have gotten a 4 user licence for not much more. Something to thnk of down the track to save cash.
Cheers

Just switched from Norton (free corporate version I can use) to AVG. To early to comment, but Norton slows the system & has large update downloads. Otherwise Ok, except that the other week realtime protection turned off & I couldn't get it back or access updates.
With this I use Kerio Personal Firewall (essential), Spybot, Adaware and Cookie Wall.
All free.
Good luck.

Try Kaspersky Anti-Virus - It is an extremely good program. I have tried the others mentioned in this post and prefer Kaspersky.
Throw Nortons in the bin. Thats all its good for.
AVG is free for a reason.

Shame about Norton, went right downhill after acquisition by Symantec.
'nother vote for NOD32, low on resource drag, high on effectiveness.
