Hello everyone.

Can anyone tell me if there is something that can be used as a substitute to the chemicals that you buy to use in Porta Potties and caravan toilets.

Thanks in advance.

Bio Magic is the gear I use. Non Toxic and eliminates the odour rather than disguise it. It's available in different sizes and concentrations.

Great product - I'll get some from Nerang Disposals. I wonder if it can be administered intravenously?

I'm interested in that borax recipe. My wife made me wash the poo nappies in borax and cleaning vinegar (in the washing machine instead of washing powder) for a couple years, cheap and very effective. I imagine a borax recipe would work well.

Yes there is a sustitute - a product called Odour-B-Gone.
Made by an aussi from Victoria.
They come as round tablets and disolve in water.
White - fast release (1 week) ; blue - slow release (? how long).
The standard liquid chemicals degrade over time - these will not degrade (if kept dry).
They are Non-toxic; safe for septic toilets; and just works.
Box of 40 white ones - about $40. (also come in box of 20 - not sure of $)

The active Chemical is Sodium Perborate. ( NaBO3 )
In water, the chemical releases the oxidizing agent hydrogen peroxide and nascent oxygen.
Other uses for NaBO3 - an ingredient in toothpast (white teeth); mouthwash (kills germs); washing powders (whitens clothes); stain remover for carpet; removes mould from bathrooms and damp areas; removes smell from shoes;
It will decompose in the environment to natural borate - an essential micronutrient for healthy growth of plants (other than citrus & some natives).

Here is his details :

I use Pine,O,Clean in flush tank, and a mixture of 200ml Pine,O,Clean & 200ml Cloudy Amonia in 1.6 liters water makes 2 liters in holding tank.

We have just returned home after an 8 month trip with the van. After the first month I stopped putting any chemicals in both the top tank and bottom tank and because we were using the toilet all the time we were emptying it every day or two and we found that there really wasn't any requirement for chemicals. This allowed us to safely empty the contents into any type of toilet facility without upsetting anything.

Another side affect that we have found is that the top tank no longer gets the black aglea in it that must be associated with the pink top tank chemical.

The good thing with bio magic is that it can be used in septic and enviro cyclle type systems.

Works well, but emptying the thing is still not something I'd like to do for a living!!
