With all the helpful people on here, i'm sure i can find some opinions on the purchase of an ex-police patrol 3.0 GUIII. Is there anyone else out there is possesion of and ex police patrol, and is there anything to watch out for????

The vehicle in question is a 2004 model and is still under new car warranty. 52000kms on the clock.

Some info i was reading on the cursed ZD30 engine stated that the earlier models had problems (i know all about the grenade factor) But this story said it was more common on ex police vehicles???

Also stated that if you had an ex police vehicle and were OUT of warranty, Nissan would be more likely to come to the party in the event of a engine failure?

Any helpfuls out there know any more about this???

Gday Damo - your best bet would be to hit major auctions , such as Pickles - im not sure where the x cop cars go to in W.A but i know the majority of the cop cars from sydney got to Enfield motor auctions ( cosgrove rd)

every week is different as far as vehicles go - so if you cant find one this week , there may be one there the following week

although they do get thrashed - they are serviced when required by log books

hope this has helped a little

Hi there Damon, Im quit sure you have that around the wrong way and that Nissan wont want a bar of your patrol once out of warranty as they (the police) start them up flog the bleep ter out of them get to where they are going flat out then switch them off, no cool down time from what I have read on here especially the country ones as they are often sitting at high speeds for a while then same thing just shut them down with out cool down period. If it was me I would be paying a little bit more and buying privately, one that has never been off road and owned by the mother running her kids to school and shopping, I've seen the patrols around here driven by the Penrith police and personally wouldnt touch one. Not saying they are ratbags as if I wanted police at my house for some reason Id want them here quick too but I think they shoud be doing that in a ford or commodore as there patrols dont even get a chance to warm up before there flat to the boards. I think nissan seem to have fixed the major problem they had with earlier patrols (by what I have read on here ) but I still wouldnt touch an ex police one. And before anyone says anything yes I have owned 3 ex police vehilces, VL turbo, VN and vp both ex chasers and didnt have a problem but with a turbo diesel wouldnt risk it. Regards Steve M

Same here
I live in penrith and have seen the boys driving them patrols, I have also seen them drive them off road in areas looking for trail bike riders, you would think they were comp machines!!! Same as you I have a ex-cop VS bomadorre V6 general duties car and has been the most reliable car I have had to date and that includes Yotas, nissans, fords, subarus and holdens. So I guess with a turbo diesel which requires a more gentle touch in life I would go for one which has been driven by the person that handed over the $$$$ for it new, more likley been looked after.

Cheers Stefan

Hi there gq, not sure if you remember or saw the article in the local rag where the boys in blue were chasing a stolen 4by and they decided to follow him through the scrub and across the river, the stolen one got away and the boys in blue got stuck in the middle of the river cause the stolen one had a snorkel the cops didnt and got stuck in the middle after sucking up a gutfull of water, betcha that was a rebuild, I doubt they rode it off as it is only fresh water but bet some ones driving around in it now. By the way I dont condem the scumbags that stole the 4by was amusing seeing the cop sitting on his bonnet with the water at top grille height.Bet he got in some bleep over that one. Regards Steve M

My BIL's a cop, and advised me long ago never to by an ex cop vehicle. They really do thrash em.

Damo, I don't know about Patrols, but when we have been to Govvy auctions, we have given the ex Police Cruisers a wide berth - they were the ones they used in the Kimberley including during the wet. Other Departments generally OK. Ours was ex education department (outback) but had been well maintained, purchased not at auction, but through a dealer where it had been traded at the 40 -50,000 km mark. Dearer than buying through an auction though.

WA Auto Auctions in Bentley is where the Government vehicles are auctioned, however as per above posts I would be giving all Police vehicles a big berth, wouldn't touch them with a forty foot pole.
Good luck with your search

Dunno about WA but in Qld they use cruisers as stationary speed cameras, parked on the side of the road for hours on end, with engines idling away to run aircon, while they monitor the cash regista....camera.
My point is the speedo will say little about the hours the motor actually ran for that day

The camera cars in qld can idle for up to 12 - 16 hours a day for weeks straight and only put 100km's on the clock
