LOL! It's a DISEASE I tells ya!
Anyway, as good as I found the Grand Cherokee CRD in the 3 years we had it, it's time is up. Out of warranty is no place to be with a high-tech common-rail marvel under the bonnet. If anything goes kapuoopfht from now on I'll need a new mortgage to fix it. Besides, we're after more interior room.
So... we went hunting today and scored a pure white (rare-ish I've heard) '96 Delica with decent kilometres, automatic 2.8TD. Lots of room, great seats and comfort for a van and able to get us around on country roads no problems. We still have the Landy for the difficult stuff, but I reckon that the Delica is going to be great for medium-level touring. The dealer threw in brand-new BFG AT tyres, 12 months rogo (from tomorrow), and a H/R towbar. I'm a happychappy indeed.
So... out with the old... and in with the old!
Any Delica drivers got any advice?
Cheers
Chris

Chris,
Wolf Man (Ian) had also chosen the "alternative experience" of the Delica and it did everything the Landcruisers, Patrols, Jackaroos, etc, did on the particular "excursion" we all experienced one particular weekend.
Wolfie is "on a pilgrimage" at present for reasons best known by himself but the Delica may just be the catalyst to "get him back on-board".

Hey there Sand Man :)
Yep - I'm in to my "alternative" vehicles. I've also heard that the Delica's are reasonably capable in their own right. They can also be farily-
well kitted out - and even snorkels are available - which is more that I could say for the Jeep!

.... I love's me Landy Axle.... just love's me Landy...... :)
As much as I liked the Jeep, it had done its work. Nothing at all went wrong over the three years I had it, but I just can't bear the thought of problems developing with that engine - there's no-one out here that knows much about it - apart from Mercedes dealers. Big$$$$$$$ !

It was the Waeco. We came to an agreement that we are both happy with.
Thanks for you input at the time!

Hi Chris,
I vaguely remember a news report where a bloke took his son out for a quick trip in his newly acquire delicia and went bush without any recovery gear.
Unfortunately he got bogged and after a time his wife, who stayed at home, reported them missing.
I distinctly remember a search and resue bloke saying on TV, after they had found them safely the next day, that he was amazed to find this ' bus' on the toughest of 4X4 track imagineable.
Must have some very good capabilities. Have fun with it.
Anyway, 3 more cars and you have a different car for every day of the week :)
Good news about the fridge, what goes around--comes around twice as good. Karma.
Cheers
Alan

When you want to do some mods, I have found that bumping the boost up on the 2.8l works a treat. I am running 15psi of boost now, instead of the stock 11 to 12 psi. It pulls like a train (or almost like a turbo 4.2 nissotya :-)) up hills now.

Forgot to add.
Other common mod on tritons/pajeros is to change the camber from 1/2 deg positive to about 0 to 1/4 deg negative.
Pack out the top A arm on the inside with some packers.
Handles a lot better, and less tyre wear on the outside.
Delicia would benifit too being triton based as per the challengers.
Talking to my mechanic, he says you need to be careful with Delicias as there are quite a few variations imported from various years. What fits one is not common to another, especially with the trim.
Good to see another Mitsubishi on the
forum.

Hi Oldplodder :)
Thanks for the advice in regards to the camber. Although the vehicle has brand new Simex Centipedes on now, I did notice the old BFG's before they came off, and they were very worn on the outside, as you say.
Triton? I was under the assumption that it is based on a Pajero... ??
Cheers

They are all very similar.
Slightly different distances between the rails, and mounting of tanks, front bumpers etc.
You may be right, it may be the gen II pajero it is based on.
There was a change in the Gen II pajero with the 2/8l diesel/3.5l petrol.
Gearbox and diffs are bigger than the older 3.0lV6/2.5l diesel, and the pajero body was raised 20mm off the chassis to fit the heavier running gear.
The 2.8l IT pajero though never came with an auto, while the Delica does, which is interesting.

LOL! Nah.. I still like my Jeeps - but I'll get a new one down the track some time. For the moment the Delica is an absolute cracker of a vehicle. I've only had it a day and i'm actually thouroughly impressed. Ride quality is great, build quality is awesome. We'll see how it performs on a few trips we have planned over the next couple of months.....

G'day Chris
A neighbour has just purchased a Delicia- by the sounds similar specs to yours. One question arose- does the Delicia have- or should have- limited slip diff in the back??

Hey there Sign-man :)
Mine doesn't, but a lot do. They are meant to be quite good - almost as grabby over time as the Nissan unit, and way better than the Toyota. You can tell reasonably easily if there is one by looking for the simple "LSD" sticker on top of the diff pumpkin. Most stickers should still be in place because they're out of the way.
I wouldn't say no to one in my Delica, but as I don't intend to use it like I would the Defender or Patrols, it doesn't faze me. If it comes to it I'll just source a LSD center if I need one later.
Cheers
Chris

we just found a sticker under the bonnet--and apart from some Jap heiroglypiphics it is stamped lsd- so I guess that might be a clue!
Thanks for your info..

There was a factory locking diff option. Some
grey import pajeros have them, with the limited slip diff as well I have been told. Best of both worlds.
Standard limited slip diff is similar to nissan design, locks up more as more torque is applied. You can respec the locking torque.
The NL (1997/1999?) had a torsen limited slip diff in some I hear. Need to clarify it yet as to exact model/year. Might look at swapping one in when this one wears out.
