I'm taking the family over to Cairns (from NZ) shortly and other than three main trips in the area to The Reef, Karanda Nat Park (skyrail) and the Daintree - Cape Tribulation (Bloomfield Track) ones, is there any other MUST SEE trips or locations. The web is unfortunately not that helpfull.

Been up there a few times - reef for sure, Mosman Gorge, Wallerman Falls, Undara Lava Tubes, Chillagoe Caves (last 2 some distances involved - some arid environments). If you hire a 4WD up there and have experience then go to Cooktown. Also try the CREB track from Daintree, Cheers Jeff
PS. Heading to NZ what are the tips over there ?

Well, im based in Christchurch and the best trips are the rivers and the West Coast forest tracks. We have some awesome mud tracks and the rivers are all shingle based so if you dont read the water right you will end up in water up to the top of your seat bogged in fine shingle! I'd like to post a picture but don't know how.

You don't need to tell me what a great place it is, i'm over there regularly. My only issue is convincing the family to go.

Good bloke that Truckster. Check out my site and feel free to ask any questions on the area. There really is so much to see up here and such diversity. The area I teach in on the Clohesy river just west of Kuranda is only 45 minutes from Cairns and every bit as Beautiful as Cape Trib 3 hours away. I have lived here for over 30 years and still find fantastic places I didn't even know existed. Cheers RobCairns Offroad Training & Tours

Jaycee..

All the spots mentioned are a must if you have the time. One thing I haven't seen anyone mention is the Atherton Table Lands....Gods country. So much to see, don't know which way to look.

The same could be said about The Daintree and so much more.

I was there 18 months ago and have been saving ever since to return. I'll be there again later this year.

Andy

We go to Cairns regularly, my son lives there. No-one has yet mentioned SCUBA Diving, White Water Rafting, Bungy Jumping (Kiwi Hacket has a great spot), where you can climb the tower even if you don`t jump, also a scary 100kph swing and, in town, the elastic bullet to fire you skywards. Finally don`t miss the Aboriginal Dance Theatre at the base of the skyrail station. All the other advice you have had is tops - have a great holiday, you`ll love the place.
