I am contemplating upgrading from my Garmin GPS76 to one of those new fangled GPS enabled PDAs. I have shortlisted to 2 the Navman PiN 570 and the Asus A636. I know a few blokes with the Navman but no one I know seems to have any knowledge of the Asus A636. I've look at the reviews available on the web and they all seem pretty positive about this device (ugliness?? notwithstanding) but I would really appreciate it if someone out there could give me a first hand view of it. You can have a look at it here.
Thanks
Pete

Navman have apparently ceased production/selling of the PDA based GPS becasue of companies such as ASUS. They simply could not compete. Thats why I bought the ASUS636n. Only had it a few days but so far so good, it came with Co-pilot live and for street level nav it is good enough for me. Yet to receive my oziexplorer package to see how that works out. The gps antenns works heaps better than my earlier GPS which was a holux bluetooth with only 12 channels. I actually get a fix inside the house - albeit beside a window with 1 metre overhanging eave. Go the ASUS!!!

Glad you found the thread.
Saved me cutting and pasting it. :-)

No, not yet to the aerial.
Have not needed too.

Have been to some areas which are pretty tree covered which supposed to be a problem, but everything worked OK.

Have used it in a plane, and here in the office.
Find if I hold it near a window (even in a plane at 10,000m), it finds a few satellites and is off and running.
As a side note, if in a plane it seems to make a few people nervous when you mention a few times to your wife in the next seat that we are at 10,323m and travelling at 854km/hr. You get some strange looks too. But it was good fun tracking the plane, better than watching a video. She had the window seat and all was working well in the next seat over.

Hi Patrol,

I did the same excercise about 6 months ago.

Be very careful of any PDA slower than 400MHz.

If you want to run a voice navigation program in the city, and oziexplorer whilst 4x4ing, then 400Mhz is minimum.

You will find most of the units available are slower than this.

I ended up purchasing a Dell 624Mhz from USA via ebay.

You also need capacity of at least 4GB with storage cards to runs all software required.

Good luck with purchase

Also, slower PDA's have a LOT of trouble reading big SD cards (like 1 gig and above) and mine has 5 gig on board. The Ipaq HW4700 does a great job but the old 205 mHz jobbie cacked itself with a 1 gig SD card in it
