Mid October I was returning to
Sydney along the freeway from
Newcastle . The patrol was travelling smoothly and suddenly a very large noise and then the engine sounded like a tin can full of nuts and bolts being shaken. The patrol was towed to the Nissan dealer where the mechanic checked the oil level and suggested possible dirty fuel. Both have been ruled out.
I phoned the next day and told them I had heard that this type of engine failure was a common problem with the 3.0 litre turbo.
They said to wait and see what the problem was and they will contact
Melbourne to see if they are aware of any problem with this engine. It turned out that N0.2 cylinder has lost compression.
The patrol is just out of extended warranty, 152,300 km, and 2 months before the 5 years end. It has been correctly serviced by Nissan since new. I have had 5th gear, the intercooler and the turbo replaced under warranty plus other minor things.
After reading other examples on this
forum I will wait and see what warranty (if any) is offered before I take the next step. I have contacted Fair Trading and they have said if it is a known fault Nissan could be liable. It happened on the 13th of October and from reading other entries this date is significant as othes have had the same date and same problem

So it was caused by the fact that it was Friday the 13th. Must be a Manufacturing issue where the on-board computer has a virus in the system causing loss of oil pressure and kaboom, thar she blows. again.
I certainly hope that Nissan come to the party for the replacement works.

13th of the month!
Paul and Barb - their 3 litre blew up on the 13/01/06 - Friday
Lynnie - hers blew up on the 13/02/06 - Monday
The 13th should be a day of rest for the 3 litre

I just had a customer come back from a 2 month trip towing a trackmaster camper with his 3.0l patrol early model, tanami track, bungles, etc etc covered 15,000km's without a problem, averaged 13.5 km per 100km some stretches sitting on 120kph.
He did break the top shocker mounts on the trailer in the bungle bungles.

thanks for your follow up. I did a 20,000 km trip around Australia in 2002, towing a trailer, also across the Tanami in a 2000 3.0 litre model. -No problems that is why I bought the Patrol. Guess it is the luck of the draw.

Ron, it may
well be "the luck of the draw" but at 40 odd thousand dollars it's a bloody expenasive ticket.
I'm a Nissan owner as
well, but fortunately I don't have a Nissan engine in it!

G'day Ron,
I have just been through a massive battle with Nissan over a vehicle. Feel free to contact me if you need any Head office contacts. I have the senior management direct phone numbers etc.
I have heard of this fault on several occasions with the 3l. With enough pressure you should get a new motor.
My experience with Fair Trading & Accc was abismal. Will never contact them again!
AAARRRGGHHHH... just missed my ebay bid coz of this message!!!!!!!! ahh
well!!
Best of luck with the car, my email addy is tomjones@people.net.au. feel free to contact me for some pointers!
Cheers
Tom

Sorry to say Ron but you are now number 17 on the Exlpor Oz list to suffer the dreaded ZD30 syndrome.
Tomjones83, was your problem with Nissan related to a ZD30 engine blow up?
Regards Andrew.

Andrew, nah mate, i have the 4.8l petrol patrol. My problem with nissan has been a 3 year battle over a nissan pulsar. finally got my way but i had to
sign a confidentially agreement regarding the matter. there was nothing in the contract however that said i couldnt coach other people with similar problems and how to resolve them ;-)

Good luck Ron. Now you have joined the club! Nissan did nothing for me and it was about $10,000 later that it was repaired although that included new clutch and oter minor works. Now it is at the Nissan dealer with a split intercooler. I think I was about number 12 on this site!

Guys, this is a known fault with these vehicles. if there are 12 people on this site and 12 of you start jumping up and down then something will happen. i am sure if you got on the patrol forums all over the net you will locate more pople who have been affected.
this is not a gripe against nissan, until recently i owned 3 post 2002 models. i just cant stand the injustice the large corporations can do to the little guy. i can assure you that with pressure, they will fold. it just takes a very large amount of pressue.
if everyone lodged complaints with the accc, there may be some action. i had no luck as my problem was a one off apparently. (the pulsar had every electrical component replaced)
best of luck for those willing to try and please contact me if you require any assistance.
kind regards,
Tom
