Evening all,
First post but have been searching
forum off and on for months now. Super impressed.
Have read numerous threads about pros and cons of Jayco/Goldstream style campers and are aware they have drawbacks if pushed too far. That said, we feel that its time to update our camper trailer and go for a little more luxury.
I'm interested to see if anyone has added coils to compliment/assist the leaf set up on these units. It crops up on a few threads as a downfall, just hoping someone may have already tried this set up with some success. Realise it won't make them able to be towed anywhere but must assist in the long run.
Also anyone know how the tow weight of the Goldstream Wing II. It seems about the size of the Dove to Eagle/Hawk. Hoping our Navara TD27 with turbo will cope.
Look forward to your replies.

Hey 93 Navara!
You can get independant
suspension as an option on the Goldstreams!?
Havent heard of anyone adding a coil to leaf sprung version - good thought though! the advertised weight of the wing II 920kg plus 100 - 150kg for off road pack. Dont own one but doing the research myself and looking towards the Goldstream Crown 4B.
Cheers

I'm now looking at buying a wing II & if you get one with the trailing arm & leaf springs then I think It will do the job, the only mod' I'd make would maybe be to add air bags if that is possible.
I'm looking into it now.
Regards.

Hi Ben, Years ago I used to pull a 7 x 5 domestic trailer behind my old Landy. I worked in the bush and sometimes hauled very heavy loads. What I did was fit a couple of "coil over shocks" in conjunction with the leaf springs. They came of an early model jap bike [ 850 GS Suzuki] from memory, added an extra 350 kg carrying capacity and vastly improved that jolting effect when loaded. The job took only 2-3 hours to set up so long as your handy with a welder. Im just looking at building a camper trailer from scratch and I will definitly be doing the same thing. Hope this may give you something to consider.......regards........nissnut.

Hi
I have been thinking of building a camper myself one day. I was wandering what the pros and cons of a tandem axle. When you look at the jayco type CT there is a lot of over hang. You would think they should have a tandem axle.
I was thinking of making
mine on say a 8ft tandem trailer simialar to a trak shak on top but instead of the beads flipping over they would slide out and no part of the tent would be on the ground. One problem with a tandem I could see is that there would be less storage on the sides.

nissnut! "coil over shocks" brilliant idea! never thought of doing that & I've been riding motorcycles for 36 years & building Off Road trailers for the last couple of years.
BUGGER I just threw out a set off one of my old Harley's a couple of months ago
: (>, I wonder if dirt bike shocks would work, longer travel & made for off road?
Typical some things arnt obvious until someone points them out to you. : )>

Yep mate they probably would. I know that a lot of the larger off road Suzukis ran Koni shocks and were designed to take a hiding, however I used road bike shocks because of weight carrying. Mind you, I havent checked out the mono shocks on todays bikes maybe there adaptable.............nissnut......ps....wot sought of machinery have you been riding all these years. I was brought up on a healthy diet of BSAs, Trumpys, and Nortons. then I nearly commited suicide on a H2 750 Kawaka, missus was never able to get rid of the brown stain in my jocks....hehe.

nissnut.
Started out on old **it box jap road & dirt bikes that I used to bash around the bush, worked my way up to some serious road burners (GPZ1100s - CBX1000/6) in the early 80s. Had numerous near death experiences there! Tried a side-car twice, hated the things. Went through 5 Harley's (one a trike, lotsa fun!) & a few dirt bikes since then, toured all around Vic' Tassie & SA then back to
Sydney on a Dyna-Lowrider with Karen (6 months preggers).
My last road burner was a Triumph Daytona 1200, way too fast (280 kph, no effort) lost licence due to DUI (in a car), so went back to dirt bikes, DR650 Suzuki at the moment.
Yeah I almost forgot I had a FJ40 Landcruiser in the mid/late 80s that I put coil over shocks on to try and control body roll, 4ways I think. They would be perfect for a
well built off road trailer.
Memories almost shot if I forget things like that : )> miss spent youth I suppose!
Jeff.
