Morning all.We are heading to Tassie week before Xmas thought crossed my mind. When going on the mobile bridge you can't take perishable goodies (fruit & vegies) what do you do about frozen goods.Do you not take any ?
Buy when you get there? I ask this as the fridge in the M/home draws to much out of the batteries if we were to leave it on while in transit (motor not going)& no gas allowed & no 240v.Thinking if we want to take frozen goods we wil have to maybe buy small Waeco 50ltr F/f & leave it on to draw off the M/home batteries (12hrs) should be ok.
Thanks for all input from those who have done it before me.

Hi Bob,

I was in Tassie earlier this year & ran my Waeco (110litre) off a second battery in my CT on the crossing. Had plenty of frozen & other goods in the fridge & turned the settings down for the trip. Had no problems at all. Actually other friends with caravan 3 way fridge turned their fridge off for the trip & all the goods survived.

I'm sure others will have had similar experiences.

Thanks John.I was thinking it would be OK,just wanted to make sure.Nothing worse than getting where you you want to be & it's all off or at best soft & you can't eat it all at once.

Buy fresh stuff when you get there - the Tassie produce is excellent. Devonport is in the middle of an extensive coastal plain with rich soils, and all sorts of stuff is grown there.

But the 12 hours or so embarking/crossing/disembarking time is no longer than an overnight stay, so your goods will remain frozen even if the fridge compressor doesn't run.

We crossed by day on the way over, so missed a day of solar input. Batteries were well charged when we left (we could have used the battery charger on mains power at the CP the night before to top them up if it was needed) and maintained adequate power with the fridge going. The car fridge was left turned off - it maintains quite well and if just for lunches and drinks when we are travelling.

Coming back we crossed by night, so made no difference with the solar.

We had frozen meat brought from home, but nothing else in the freezer section.

Tasmania has wonderful fresh vegetables, and you can sometimes buy fresh from roadside stalls. In general, shopping not much different to mainland prices. In your case, perhaps just shutting down the fridges to maintain anything non frozen, and re purchasing supplies may be the easiest way to go; cheaper than buying a small fridge, if you don't need it. You are going to the isle famous for wonderful food.

I'm sure you'll have a fabulous trip.

If you can, put some of those blue plastic "freezer blocks" in before you turn everything off. Freinds of ours who don't have a hotwire for the fridge in their Jayco camper do this while travelling. It works well and should last the trip considering your rig won't be in the sun.

As long as the freezer is well and truly chilled down it will last well over a day.
