We are going to the High country again Xmas, now from what we saw last year at Sheepyards, (You Vics like to camp shoulder to shoulder) campsites starts to get popular around boxing day on aspecially the 2WD access places.

This year one of the places we will stay at for a while will be either Indian Flat or Talbotville, my question which is the least likely to get too crowded.

Hi Baz, I don't know where Indian Flat is but Talbotville is always popular and is 2WD accessible. You can fluke it with not many people there or its worse than Bourke Street complete with kids on mini bikes almost riding through your camp. Plus you have to go half way to Hotham to find firewood. If you can get across the river you are much better off.

Excellent, just what i wanted to know;

Indian Flat is on the Dargo river on the track to Dargo near Harrisons Cut, it looked fairly good as reguards people, i might check out some 4WD only spots as well.

Thanks again.

G'day again Baz, Italian Flat, I know where you are now as I haven't been up there for a while. I see you are coming across from Omeo along Jones Rd there is (or was a few years ago) a big open area North of the road on the East side of the Wentworth River. You turn off right at the bridge, its shown on older maps as Wild Horse Creek track. The open area is not visible from the road so it might be worth a look and its a short walk to the river where there was a good swimming hole.

We camped at Indian Flat in 99 and had the whole place to ourselves (a group of 5 familys) and when we went to Talbotville the place was like Pitt St (sorry, not familiar with Bourke St.)

Baz

At Talbotville, the large flat area in the middle which can cater for
kids on their mini-bikes and even last minute Tag along tour convoys
is both its strength and weakness. This along with the fact that several
tracks come together around there.

We have camped in same exact spot for serval years now with a dozen cars
and bikes because we get there on Xmas day.

Indian flat does not have as many immediate attractions, but is usually
quieter.

A much underated area is 2 valleys to the west of Talbotville along
the Wonnagatta road, north of the Wonnagatta C/V park.
This road has to one of the best 2wd roads in the counrty for scenery
along its 50km long southern end, and the are many many camping
places (Xmas-to New Year) on the river even before you get to the secret
4wd places at the northern end.

OK thanks we will be there at the same time as you guys, Italian Flat is looking better for less people, we have campertrailers too and will be coming down the track that crosses the Dargo river at the turn off to Harrisons Cut.

Swifts creek to Dargo trek from the book Tracks of the High country by Cathy Savage

I've been calling it Indian Flat when it should be Italian Flat, sorry.

Thanks all, i will check out other options including the secret 4WD spots ;-))

Redback, if you don't like camping "shoulder to shoulder" as some do, why pick designated camp grounds that are accessible by normal sedan vehicles?
There are literally hundreds of secluded spots all through that area.

We are meeting people there, then heading off to more secluded places, it's only one of a few places we are going.
