I have just purchased a 98 GXL 100series Cruiser diesel auto non turbo. Currently I am looking at all the options I have with a view to turbo charging the truck. I have taken on board all the comments about factory versus aftermarket and am even considering changing engines from the 1hz to either a 1hdft or 1hdfte as well as just doing the after market turbo. Seems to be quite a few readers on this forum who have turboed a manual but has any one done or heard of this being done to an auto.
I would appreciate some advice.
cheers Geoff

Before I bought my Td GU patrol I was looking at an auto 100 series diesel with doing exactly as you you are thinking, but money, or lack of it stopped me dead in my tracks.

In my mind it would be an awesome rig. I wouldn't go to the bother or expense of fitting another engine. Wiring harnesses and computer bits would make it quite a tedious and expensive job.

There is a bloke I spot quite regularly in Vic Park [WA] with one and I look on with interest every time I see his rig.

A good aftermarket turbo and decent exhaust brings impressive improvements to the 1HZ, so I hear.

To quote "Nike", Just do it. The result is terrific and the best $3500 you will spend on the truck. Power from 96 to 136kw and torque from 295 to 390nm and that is without changing the exhaust. Are you in Sydney?

I am in Cairns, NQ. Just wondering which aftermarket turbo produces those figures you quote. They are impressive.
I also hear some readers talking about the gear box not being up to the task of coping with the aftermarket turbo conversions on the manual changeovers. Does anyone know much about the auto box in my rig.....whether it should handle the aftermarket turbo conversion?

Hi Geoff
as far as I know its the same transmission in the factory turbo(A442f) and cope with turbo-ing well.
there some probs with manual g/boxs (STD DEISEL) becos' of the modest power outputs of the std 1HZ they weren't built big
I wouldn't even consider putting a 1HDTFE in simply because they are electronically controlled motor and need inputs from everywhere just to function and I would think that it would be a nightmare to wire up,even though its a diesel
be careful who you choose for the turbo installation( if you do yours) for it to be done right expect to pay $5
I know this because I have been doing research myself, gathering data/feedback on turboing my 1HZ
I can get a turbo for $2450(mail-order) but it is NOT as simple as bolting it on ,see ya later, It takes the blokes who know 2 days to do the job, because of whats involved
In answering your post, no dramas with turboing the auto

Hi Mayess
Forget about changing the motor
the 1hd-ft produces 118kw and the 1hd-fte produces 122kw (with out an intercooler 150 kw with an intercooler)

A 1hz turbo will give you around 130 - 135 kw with a 2 1/2 exhaust and 8psi boost

The cost if you are Mechanicaly minded and handy

approx price $2300 - $2800 for a Turbo kit

And around $150 Dyno tune

If you pay to have the kit installed complete fitted and tuned

average price $3600

i know a few people who have 1hz turbo and have had no problems

I put a DTS turbo on our 4 Runner when we had it and it cost me$2600 for the turbo kit and then the 4wd shop I purchased it from tuned it for $120.Oh yeah, got me injectors done for $360.The vehicle already had a H/D clutch fitted.

Shane, ring around and do some homework.

a Turbo kit can be installed on an 80 series and 100 series 1HZ Landcruiser in 6 hours ! Fitted and Tuned, 1 Man

For $5000 You MUST be getting more than just the turbo

(injectors and pump reset and calibration)

well yes I have done some home work, yes the price does include pump reset/injector inspection/exchanged, cam shim measure and/or adjust as well as mandrel bent exhaust
after spending a great deal of time searching old threads this was the popular consensus for doing the job right for a vehicle that has 85k
I have phoned 3 recognised turbo installers in the Brisbane area and their price was the same as well as fitting time and procedure (what they claimed to do)
when you say tuned what's involved?
I know the rule of thumb is to give the pump 3/4 turn and look for black smoke but I would prefer a bit more scientific approach which is why the bigger dollars
also all 3 I rang have their turbo's set at 10 pound.
If you can find/know some-one who you can trust to do a PROPER JOB( and cheap), good on you, but for the rest of us have to go for a reputable fitter and take on what ever their advice is.Their experience comes at a price!
so I do thread searches to find reputable installers/fitters to get some direction from EO members who have had the job done satisfied and go from there,.
I take on advice from some-one who has no financial gain from me before I listen to a sales pitch or read a glossy brochure

Thanks to those who have replied for the advice. Sound like definitely steer away from the motor swap idea espec the 1hdfte. The aftermarket turbo sounding more attractive espec as Shane D suggests the auto box in my rig is the same as the one in the factory turbo models.......should handle the job. So up here in cairns seems the two main options are either the Garrett or the Safari kits. Which way should I go and is there any advantage in fitting intercooler for extra bucks?
Will I run into temp problems without intercooler?
I have heard that you should limit the boost to 8psi.
cheers Geoff
