Hi Guys,
I have some family over during the X-mas holidays who would like to experience sleeping in
the desert under a blanket of stars. I am based in
Perth and I am thinking about driving part of the
gunbarrel highway. I have got no experience in 4WD-ing but driving it on sealed roads and I am aware that this will limit my options. To all you experienced outback crusaders my question is whether driving part of the gunbarrel hwy is a good choice or are their other
routes I should go for? I am open for all advise and/or suggestions in regard of realizing the experience.
Thanks

Hi Dutch6
www.wa4wda.com.au/
The first thing I would be doing is to get on to a club in your area (Follow link above) and do some
driver training with them. Don't take the first one that comes up, do a trip with 2-3 at least, before you join, this will help you decide who you will be happier with.
They can teach you over a period of time for the cost of
membership($60-$100) as opposed to a course that lasts one day and costs the earth.

Most clubs will still have one or two trips before Xmas.

D6,Great idea to travel to
the desert once you have built experience but probably not until then and certainly not over the summer period when temperatures build up pretty high levels. Just be cautious about those thoughts please.

Dutch6,
I have only recently moved to
Canberra from
Perth and know the area pretty
well, was and still am a member of Peel 4wd Club (Rockingham). As a starter and for something to wet your appetite I would look at the
Holland Track (Starts just out of
Hyden and works to
Coolgardie) it is a rather simple trip but very engoyable nun the less. You will see a wide range of varied country along the way. If you want to spend longer out there then you can also have a look at
Cave Hill, very much worth a look......Hope this helps......

I certainly wouldn't be doing it at Xmas. Save it for mid year school holidays. Meanwhile get some experience via the above mentioned clubs, or a trainer, or take a tag-along in
the desert first.
Cheers
David
