All,

I would appreciate your experiences and feedback for our first trip to Moreton. There are about 5 families heading over on the 2nd January for a week. We are currently looking at either Blue Lagoon or Ben Ewa.

Blue Lagoon is our current preference but is it sheltered from the winds or exposed? I would like to hear about the pro's and con's for both.

Many thanks

Hi Coolman!

We generally like Blue Lagoon as there is always the sea breeze to keep things cooler (especially that time of year). The campsite isn't that exposed and there are sites where you're tucked right in behind the dunes if you don't want it too windy. Beautiful beach out the front and fantastic lake out the back - couldn't ask for more!

Cheers

Russ

Coolman,
Have been going to the Island for about 20 years now the surf side is our preferred camping side always get a good breeze & most camps offer good cover from that sun. Blue Lagoon has good clean showers(cold) & M&F toilets. The only problem that could arise is the large camp area required(5 families) could be difficult that late in the Christmas period, you may find a beach camp not far from the official camp area to suite your needs.
On Ben Ewa the vermin will carry you away at dusk & dawn if you are not smothered in repellent. Not realy a problem on the surf side. If i can help with more info feel free to ask.

Blue lagoon is the pick , be aware that it is very popular for the week that you have picked ,you cant book the site/s there either ,first in best dressed , from the showers south , one magic camp near the water pump box ,bit of noise but the best spot in a storm , 20/30mtr further south is room for 5/6 camper trailers if you like tent peg onto tent peg , is 2 dunnes back from the beach ,but as I say gets VERY busy as is close to the blue lagoon car park area ,and it would seem that every man and his dog goes to the toilets and showers there ,,, also be aware that just an "ice" run is a 13klm drive one way ,takes an average of 40/45 min each way.

The busiest time execpt for easter. Did you look at North Point Camp ground. This best part of Moreton by far. Fishing off the rocks, in the creek, surfside only 15mins away. Brand new showers and toilets, fresh water, not so good for vans and trailers because carparks are seperate to campsites. Might be too late to get a spot. Blue lagoon is a large site, Ben Ewa much smaller. Blue Lagoon has the lagoon of course for fresh water swimming and Ben Ewa has the Tangalooma wrecks for snorkeling. Wind is usually S/E so Blue Lagoon gets a good breeze but sometimes it's too windy on the eastern side. I have a holiday home at Cowan Cowan just north of Ben Ewa. Hope this helps.

A lot of the sites we saw there when we went for a look trough at the first part of the camp area in June were very small and we wouldnot have been able to fit the camper trailer on any of them and even out tent. Will admidt did not go through the other part and if membory serves me correct they were bigger. Much prefer to camp somewhere along the beach futher south.

Hi Coolman,

Just got back from Moreton and a few bits of info that may help you.

The next bit in " is from the epa website:

"Park Alerts

Campground Closure
Eagers Creek campground is closed to all recreational camping. Toilet and water facilities will remain open for general use.

This site is culturally significant to Traditional Owners of Moreton Island. Please respect this sensitive site.

Temporary facilities closure
Toilet facilities at Blue Lagoon and The Wrecks campgrounds will be undergoing maintenance over the next two months.

Work will start at The Wrecks campground on Monday 16 October 2006, and should be completed within 6 weeks.

Blue Lagoon campground facilities maintenance will commence on Monday 23 October 2006, and should be completed within 6 weeks. The hybrid toilet on the track to the Blue Lagoon car park will remain open throughout this period.

The QPWS will endeavour to ensure that at least one toilet is open at each site for this period, but there may be times when the whole area will be closed off for Workplace Health and Safety purposes.

If you have any queries about the closures, please contact Ranger-in-charge Chris Hanlon on 3408 2710 or Senior Ranger Greg Carter on 3821 9000."

Also they are about to implemenet an online booking system for camping on the island. It will be the same as Cooloola and Fraser where you either ring up and prebook your site or you can do it online. The rangers told us it will be up and running in a the next few weeks. They are expecting some bugs that will have to be sorted out.

My pick for five families would be Blue Lagoon if you can get a spot at that time of year.

Have a good trip.
