Planning to take a few days away
camping before the Christmas Hoo Haa, and I'm thinking that in a drought, the Murray is perhaps the logical place to visit, with irrigation
water being released down it rather than
camping on the banks of a dry watercourse. So I got to thinking that between the Hume Dam and Khancobin there might be some quiet campsites. So to my request. Is there a list of sites, preferably with maps of the locations and/or any recomendations that can be made regarding campsites along this streach of the Murray? Looking forward to replies.

Burrowye is great, Neil's Reserve which is further upstream is good also. there is a spot at Alfred Gap but it is hard to find and define where
the entrance is. Good spot below the Jingellic pub. You could knock on a few doors and you may be surprised that one of the local farmers may let you
camp on their property. There is a book that has been released recentlyby the local shires this way highlighting exactly what your asking. Try your local
tourist info centre for it. Cost was about $6.00.

Hi madcow
Ive camped at Mt Alfred Gap many times on private property. Just curious where you get into yor spot on the river. Is it the turn to the left at the u bend on the road to Jinjellic or the turn opposite Mt Alfred Gap Rd where the old school is.
Wherever in this magnificent area is Gods Rural Retreat away from the Northern Beaches of
Sydney.

G'day Eric, sorry it's taken a while but I've been away with work. From Memory we turned off to the left as you described. We were with other people at the time and was about 10 years ago. things may have changed since then i guess. It's a shame given the number of people that get into theses
reserves that there is no dunnys installed. Are you in the AW4WDC? The name rings a bell.
cheers

As an alternative look at Walnuts
free camping area about 14km SE of
Mitta Mitta , drop
toilets, Little
Snowy River horseshoe curves around it (free clean
water from stream 50 meters away), bitumen strip on main
Omeo Highway to keep dust down. Trout in season & if you are smart enough. Free walnuts in season. Suggest do not travel up from
Omeo (bad road & logging trucks), travel down from Albury /
Tallangatta (from a South Aussie).
