A couple of questions regarding using a computer for in car navigation.
I have installed a desktop computer under the drivers
seat and an 8" LCD touch screen up on the dash. I will soon be getting the GPS receiver to go with it.
I am looking at NATMAP Premium 2x DVD set.
When I install the software for the receiver does it give me a basic setup or does it do nothing at all without oziexplorer or a program such as NATMAP?
Do I still need to get a program like oziexplorer to run the NATMAPs through?
Thanks for the help
Tim

A 'viewer' comes with the NATMAP DVD which enables you to view the mapping. But you will need to use Oziexplorer to allow your GPS and mapping to work together.

Ok, now on oziexplorer you have to specify 2 points on the map to enable the soft ware to work out where you are. Does that have to be done on every map?
Like if I was cruising at 120kmph would I have to re-calibrate a map continuously as I bring up new maps or is it all automatic?

OziEx comes with the calibration for the NATMAP maps.
Please don't do anything with your map at 120 km/h if I am anywhere near you though.

On initial set up, you configure Oziexplorer to run with your chosen GPS. From then on, 'Moving Map' will display your current location and update the information every few seconds. As your position changes, so does the map display on your screen. There are several setup options for how your display works.

If you use oziexplorer you are able to import the natmap file (ecw) into the program and you don't have to calibrate the maps but you do need a program like Ozie. If you need more info email me at barnratoptusnetdotcomdotau

Tim,
The Natmap Raster program can be run and the maps viewed "stand-alone", but as others have pointed out, to use these maps with a GPS input requires a program such as OziExplorer. This will give you all you need in the way of moving maps as a continuous display of where you are.
Just a word of caution though. If you wish to do other things such as record waypoints along the way, you may find the 8" touchscreen display rather small.
I tried a 7" display and have since replaced it with a notebook mount for a better, bigger view and more control over the features of OziExplorer.
In any case Tim, with OziExplorer and Natmap Premium software applications you will have an excellent solution to suit your travelling needs.
If you have any specific queries, just ask ExplorOz and you will receive a multitude of replies from experienced users of these products.
Just one tip to make life easier for you, at least to start with.
When installing Natmap, allow it to install in the default C drive directory, assuming you have sufficient room on this drive. In this way, the OziExplorer installation will be straight forward and the Maps location easily found.
If you install the maps on another drive/directory (e.g. D:) you will need to further configure OziExplorer to "tell it" where the map files are.
Good Luck.

Sand Man
I use OziexplorerCE on my Asus Mypal PDA (integral GPS) and find the touch screen, which is only 3.5 inches, quite easy to work with. A bigger screen would be nice I guess but I couldn't imagine having a laptop size set up in the front with me all the time - can just imagine the whinging from the missus. How do you find it?

Sand Man,
I use an old Jornada (approx 3.5 inches) with OziCE. Just turn Screen Control ON and then it's two taps on the screen to set a waypoint and one more to go back to the map. Easy as :)))

Patrol,
SHMBO used to "whinge" on the inconvenience of the Notebook sitting on her lap but since mounting it above the centre console, she quite likes the idea.
Before that we had a 7" touchscreen mounted in the same place, with the Notebook under the
seat, but the small screen size made mapping exercises all but impossible.
The extra cables for the touchscreen was also a PITA.
The screen control mentioned by Al (Gramps) sounds like a good solution though for OziCE running on a PDA.

Yeah SandMan - my pda has the touch screen facility with OziCE - also only has a single cable that being the power lead. All in all it is a pretty handy unit.
