This a copy of an email that I sent to Powerlite Generators in Sydney.

I purchased this machine thru an Ebay reseller with a Powerlite warranty on the 15th of August 2005,

During the ensuing 12 months I ran the Generator (using Smart Throttle) to operate a Waeco 40 litre refrigerator thru a Waeco Mobitronics Rectifier and a Woods Automatic

3 Stage Battery Charger.

On the two occasions that I ran the machine (for about two hours per time) it operated without problems, In August this year whilst away North of Brisbane I attempted to use the machine and it would not start, drained and refilled with new fuel, cleaned the spark plug, and checked the air filter and oil level, still would not start.

Powerlite advised contact the Brisbane repairer, Contacted them and was advised to take it to them, unfortunately we were away at the time and when we got the machine to them it was 4 days out of warranty.

When I next contacted the Brisbane repairer, I was informed that Powerlite had rejected the claim, this I accepted, I hope this was due to the machine being purchased thru a reseller!

Rang the Brisbane repairer several times during the next two weeks and was told they would ring back when they had fixed it, or they had found it, or the bloke that was doing the work had returned to the workshop, but never received one return call, the only contact I had with the Brisbane repairer was instituted by me, when I finally got a positive response from them they said – yours is the 2KVA one isn’t it.

During the next month I started the Kipor with a 60W bulb connected on two occasions for about ten minutes each time, no problem.

Connected and started the machine attached the same fridge and battery charger at Calliope everything operated as it should for about 30 minutes, when the machine suddenly increased revs considerably, when I went out to check the Green output lamp was operating but there was no output to the fridge or BC, shut down the machine and left it till morning, next day tried again with the same result.

Rang the Brisbane repairer to ask advise to be told they will ring back when “someone comes in”, once again no contact, three hours later I rang again to be advised that they had not heard of that problem before but, if I bought it in they would look at it ”Problem” by this time I was in Rockhampton, OK , I asked if they had an agent or repairer in Rocky, answer was “I will find out and ring you back, can I have your phone number “ duly given,

Four hours later still no call and I had to leave Rockhampton and now have no mobile coverage for the next week.

Please is there a repairer in Queensland that cares!!!!

The previous part of this letter was written whilst I was away North and although I have cooled down somewhat on rereading it I can see that the major problem I have probably does not concern you, regardless I would like to have the machine repaired and operating as it should.

I have just returned home from my trip that was somewhat spoiled by the generator problems.

I have set up the Kipor and caravan and operated the system as usual ( Waeco and BC), I have had it running for 35 minutes now it appears to be running a bit “rough” and twice it has increased revs almost as if the Smart Throttle switched off and then after this time I switched on a 15W bulb the generator immediately over revved, to a level that I think is higher that normal running revs, and the output indicator was still lit but there was no power to any of the loads.

I am sure that the 1KVa Kipor should be capable of handling the Waeco and a normal caravan 3 stage battery charger plus at least a small bulb without as much trouble as this one seems to have.

I would like to know if you can recommend a repairer in Brisbane that is able to fix this machine.

Thank You

Ten Minutes after sending this email I recieved a call from Powerlite explaining that they no longer have a repairer in Brisbane but they were prepared to ship the genny down to Sydney, repair it and send it back, on the day that I contacted the transport company the truck arrived to pick up the Genny ( well done 1st Fleet), the machine has since been returned after having undergone a Major overhaul and I am more than happy to recommend Powerlite to anyone contemplating the purchase of a Generator.

P.S. The email has been edited to protect the guilty!!!

Just after I bought my Honda 2 KVA jigger I came across the Kipor same same one at about $700 cheaper… was spitten chips… after a close inspection I came to the conclusion it was a Honda in disguise made under licence in China, apart from the outside case everything else looked identical ????…It could be a case of you gets what you pays for… & it may even turn out to be one of them “Engel/Waco”… Bun fights…For the record I`m more than happy with Mr Honda. Cheers Ron

Hmmm..... A lot of stuff from China is good - we see it everyday in all of the shops - but there is still a lot of unreliable, poorly made crap of course - a few days back I bought one of those heavy, cast iron, multi-ring gas burners - the type that you sit a large metal bin on and cook crabs etc. Three brass taps for burner control - cost $40 - not cheap in my view for something that didn't work from the off !! Had to pull one of the taps apart and free a complete blockage inside - and the screws that hold the tap assembly on were of such crap quality metal that the phillips head slots started to chew out on simply trying to pinch them up - replaced them with screws of my own - hopeless. What would a couple of decent screws cost ? And why not try the bloody burner out before packing it ? Seems that a lot of goods built in China BUT designed, owned and controlled by outsiders can be great (some famous name power tools etc) but lookout for the stuff that the Chinese design and own themselves. Lucky I could fix my burner - I'd be stonkered trying to fix a gennie but !
