Im not a grain farmer but the circles are where centre pivot irrigators are used. These are a big wheeled frame that carries sprinklers on a long pipe that pivots around a central water inlet point - hence "centre pivot". The diameter might be as much as half a kilometre. Also, sometimes they are cultivated or harvested in a circular pattern. However close inspection of some of the circles at your Google location have been worked in straight lines or blocks.

Thanks Val
I have seen those sprinklers but don't they run in a straight line. anyhow these blokes in WA must have square sprinklers S28 50 15.1 E115 13 58.9.

I just measure one and it's 797 meters diameter this co-ord will drop right into the center S35 11 52.3 E140 59 26.7

Val I think you are right , S35 02 30.4 E140 57 36.5 look at that one and you can see where the wheels have been and how it's pivot from the center

Like your website Doug.
You are right, some of the travelling irrigators do go backwards and forwards not around in a circle. In the circle with the "pie slice" ( S35 11 52.3 E140 59 26.7) the darker segement was possibly all that was watered, maybe for an earlier crop. The square circles in WA are probably not irrigated, we are just seeing the tracks made by the tractors and harvesters. Incidentally most of these big tractors are now using GPS to guide them - hardly need a driver!. Some use a system called "controlled traffic" so the tractor follows the same wheeltracks at each pass over the ground. This minimises the amount of ground that gets compacted, and helps water to penetrate better.

Want I want to see is a sign on the fence that tells me what they are growing.
Wheat, oats etc easy to identify but some crops in the early stage have me stumped.
