G'day all, I did some shopping for quotes the other day on the things I thought I would need to tow a caravan. The first thing I started with was the Dual battery system. I was quoted by a
Darwin company that it would cost $750.00. They would also install a fridge plug for $165.00. 12 volt outlet on towbar, live wire and Anderson plug for $165.00. or 12 volt outlet bar with solinoid for $265.00 with anderson plug. Before I go to far with all the quotes, which is better, Live wire or what ever the alternative is called?
UHF radio TX3400 with AE 4 or 8ki antenna for $820.00. Brake controller $330.00. 40lt Engel fridge with bag for $1250.00 and to finish the quote
Suspension Kit for 100 series L/C for $1680.00. I thought these were the things that I would need after reading caravan forums. Am I close to the mark or are there things that I have missed. The quotes come to $4830 or $4930. Is this reasonable? Any help from genuine 4WD's not salesman or interested parties, would be appreciated.
Peter

Peter
Spent 20 years in the Top End and know the prices....lol
A dual battery system should cost around $100 for a battery tray, $150 for a battery, $50 wiring, $50 for solenoid and inboard switch = $350 plus 20% for being in
Darwin=$420 Do the work yourself. Its not that difficult
Dont know about brake controller.
UHF and antenna should not cost more than $400. Buy off Ebay and install yourself maybe even less expensive
Engel Fridge is about spot on
Suspension Kit should also be about the right price(My OME for the Nissan 2" lift cost $1220
Cheers

Peter,
The quotes given to you do NOT necessarily sound like a rip off to me.
A top end electronic dual battery system (Piranha DB series) costs $800+ including the rear outlet, wet cell deep cycle battery and tray, including installation, from
places like TJM in
Adelaide.
(This is what I paid about 4 years ago which included relocation of a couple of engine components to enable the second battery to be fitted)
Yes, you can get most of the individual items a bit cheaper if you
shop around in the bigger cities.
Yes, you can do a cheaper installation if selecting a lower spec'd isolator and other components.
Yes, you can save money if you do it yourself.
But, if you are unable to do it yourself and the installer who quoted you is using quality components, I don't think they are "ripping you off".
My guess is, you have a limited selection of installers in
Darwin when comparing to the other big cities with more "competition", but unless you can travel to
Adelaide, or
Perth, or
Melbourne, etc., you don't have must of a choice.
And, the cost of traveling to these
places will negate whatever cheaper quotations you may get.
Be sure the Installer is quoting the options you want, or need and that you understand what each option (e.g. live wire) will give you.
All up mate, I think the quotes are reasonable.
Good luck with your choices Pete.

Gee, your a hard man Bruce.
The cost of a 3400 from Prestige Communications - $429
An antenna - about $100 thereabouts.
That means the Supplier installation cost for both the Radio and antenna is around the $290 mark.
I'm not in the installation business, but that sounds reasonable to me.

Having done MANY radio installations (comms gear for news crews into vehicles etc) I can tell you $290 for 1/2 hrs work is a bit steep.... (2 power wires, 1 coax termination, mounting a antenna onto a baseplate to bullbar, and a mount for the radio and mike)
If you did it yourself it would take an hour or two, but these guys would have done soooooo many that they could do the 8/5 of p!ssed in the dark with blunt tools, in less time than it would take the average person to size up the problem.......
Sounds like a right royal reaming (if you get the drift)....
1 Hr tops at ~$60/hr.

how ya goin Peter,
some of these prices seem a bit steep(with out thoroughly checking my self) but I can say the price for
suspension is dear
I got 4 HD springs/shocks from terrain taimer (lovells springs/rocab? shocks) for $800,fitted myself,60mm lift.
I had major steering issues because of the castor being altered and getting told that it would cost $400 to rectify,I got other opinion's and one that I went with was to "put up with it" until it settles and the second battery/winch goes on, to pull the front back down.
steers good now, I deliberately went out and found humps/dips where I could get a wheel or two swinging in the air too help springs settle thus correcting castor issues.
Its pointless getting castor corrected a week after springs go in because they take 3-4 weeks to settle and THEN decide if it needs it,
mine didn't
