Hi,
Already done a search but thought there might be more info out there.
I have little knowledge in this area but hear goes.
I want to save and play my music in the 4x4 and at home through my stero. Also want to back up photos either through the laptop or if possible straight from the camera.
I know little of the subject just a few terms like ipod, mp3 etc, etc.
What would be suitable, am I able to buy the one unit to do all the above??
Thanks

I use the iRiver PMP-120. It's a 20GB MP3 and video player with screen. It also has the ability to plug in USB devices like a card reader with which you can transfer photos from the camera to the device.

Austravel,
I've got an X-drive which I use for backing up photos. I got it about six years ago so it's not the most 'up-to-date'.
Your memory card from your camera fits in a slot on the drive and with the push of a button saves all the photos to the inbuilt hard drivge of the x-drive.
You can store and play music (it came with head phones) but I think the newer ones have been improved to play mp3 and display photos etc.
Mine doesn't have a LCD screen to display the photos - only basic lettering to show folders etc.
Do a search on google for X drive or XS drive.

Cant go wrong with IPOD!! i have an IPOD photo (20gb). has every cd i own on it along with every digital photograph. i also bought an ITRIP to plug into it. it sends the music to any stereo with an FM tuner. Yep, will work in your car too. I basically have my own Radio station setup and tune the car into it. works great when
camping. i just have it on random but keep the ipod in my top pocket whilst sitting around. if we want to change the song, dont have to get up ;-) IPOD tends to have more genuine accessories that most other brands.

The main reason that iPod has a big range of accessories is that it comes with nothing to start with! Other brands have built in voice recorders, FM radios etc as standard.
This is what Choice thinks of them ......
The iPod is one of 10 products, including "miracle" magnetic laundry balls and meat pies with barely any meat, to win Choice's Shonky Awards.
At an awards ceremony hosted by "the least shonky hosts" Choice could find - comedians Roy Slaven and H.G.
Nelson - this year's 10 shonkiest products on the market were named and shamed at the NSW
Art Gallery this afternoon.
And here is the source....(dated 10th Oct 2006)

If Roy & HG were the best (least shonky) that Choice could find then IMO Choice has dropped way down the list of credible Organisations.
But maybe we will give them the benefit of doubt that the Shonky Awards was merely a tongue-in-cheek exercise.
Why would most people want a range of accessories for their iPod anyway?
It's kind of like my mobile phone. Don't want a camera in it, don't want Internet access, I just need to make and receive phone calls.
And, the you beaut little iPod Shuffle I own. Just want to play songs, either in order, or "shuffled". That it does very
well. Holds plenty of songs too.
The only accessory I have and need is an FM transmitter and 12 volt power source/charger in the one unit, so that I can hear the music through the car stereo.
So bugger what "Choice" says. I don't want bells & whistles built-in or bundled in with the purchase price. I want the 'choice' of simple solutions. (pun intended)

I'm with you Sandman . My iPod is just fine the way it came and I think it is one of the best items I have ever bought . Maybe they should judge the awards on customer satisfaction .
I have it wired into my car radio and it charges whilst attached . I can control it though the radio and the radio screen gives me the same read-out as the iPod screen .
I have eleven hundred songs on it and I have not even made a dent in the memory .
I think Mac deserve some credit for stating off the whole MP3 thingie anyway ( I think they did didn't they ? )
I have an 80 gig external hard drive at home with all my music stored on it , so that if I total my iPod , I have a back up of all the music I have downloaded from iTunes etc .
Getting back to the original question , I take a small laptop with me in a metal case with rubber padding ( I am a bit anal about damaging the hard drive on the corrugations ). I can upload my camera onto it and check them to see if there is any problems - a very handy thing because on a trip to the Pilbarra a couple of years ago , I was halfway into the trip and found that the auto focus was slightly haywire . I could not pick it up looking at the little screen on the camera , but it was obvious on the 'puter screen . Also I am putting Oziexplorer on it when I can figure out how it works !

Going for the long term,go with iPod..I gave away my two six stackers (CD) as I have 2750 tunes on
mine and it is just over half full.Got the FM broardcaster/plug in charger..Six stacker annoyed me with over a thou CD,the empty cases got mixed up with full ones.( I use a "black hole " filing non-system )..Any of my Macs or iMacs auto update th tunes on docking. (We have 10 PC's in our biz but, prefer Macs for Photoshop®,Final Cut Pro®,Photo To Movie® etc and just general eaze of use with the inherent stability of the Mac OS x platform.) Santa is bringing me the Apple™ iPod photo/video/music as,no doubt, you have guessed I have been good this year (or some of it:-) Why get a "Wanttabe" when you can have the real thing?!MPG:8!

Hmm, quite a reaction there - you would think that I criticised Landrovers or something!
A couple of points -
* I don't think that Choice bagged the iPod Shuffle, just the full size version.
* I think MP3 players are great, I just don't think that iPods are the best available or the easiest to use or the best value for money, and they suck you into their system where they can relieve you of as much cash as possible.
* I don't actually use an MP3 player myself but have bought 7 for family members so have had some experience. 2 iPod shuffles are fine. Creatve Zen 30GB is just brilliant, Creative Zen Nano is still in the mail (bought it on Tuesday), and 2 cheopo ebay options bought a couple of years or so ago did as
well as expected for the very cheap price and died about on schedule. The iRivers was complete and total rubbish and was returned and replaced by the Creative Zen. (Yes, I know that lots of people love iRivers, please, please, I really don't want to hear from you)

Theres too many options out there....
For music in the car I convert to MP3, put them on CD (get 8-10 albums per CD) and play them in my Pioneer MP3 stereo.
For photos, my computer that I use for mapping has a CF card reader, and a 20 gig HDD, so they get backed up there.
For walking or riding to work, I use a 2gig Sandisk Sansa - I prefer it to an Ipod because it also has voice recorder, FM radio etc, and it also plugs into my work and home computer for storing files, and it recharges while doing so.
Follow this, and you'll be as confused as I am :-)))

Just to add to the confusion I have heard of people using PSP for this. It is wireless capable and will store anything your computer will. Transfer either way using the wireless connection and access internet.
I don't know the full range of capabilities but I will by tea time Christmas day as my son will open his gift from Santa early that morning.

There are so many solutions to these problems.
Pic's
I have used a few different methods. One was just to go to an internet Cafe and burn the pic's to CD. Lots of them have card readers built in. Where the didn't I had a plug in USB card reader. I would burn them twice. Take one with me and post the other to my sister. She got an update and if the one I carried was damaged I still had a copy.
I also had a nifty device that was a portable CD burner that had every card reader known to man built in. So could just burn from card to CD, no PC required. The other bonus that it had a USB2 port and you could use all the readers and CD Burner on your PC.
I must admit that I often thought a cheap laptop in a Pelican case would be the way to go. The case is shock proof and
water proof. I'm not sure I would risk a $5k laptop though.
Music
After the CSR with 8 tapes we have decided to get an iPod and FM Tx. I know there are plenty of equivalents that are cheaper. My thoughts are that Apple tend to over engineer there stuff and spend a lot of time on the human interface. I usually use a PC not a Mac but I can tell you that until recently Mac's had more inovative GUI's and more powerful processors. Basically they are the better product but more expensive. A bit like Beta/VHS tapes. Beta was the better technology but VHS became the more dominant.
