Simple question, but I need some advice.

When mounting a fridge onto a fridge slide, do I still need to mount it with the spring base or not. Is it necessary. I have a 40 litre Engel, if that makes any difference.

According to Engel, the short answer is ... no!

They say that modern vehicle suspension has negated the need for spring bases, however if you were mounting the fridge in a camper trailer (not all) or an older 4WD, you could consider one.

Nah- I don't think so.
Our (Engel 40) has been on a fridge slide- no spring base- for many trips over some severe country with no adverse problems..

My 40 litre Engel has lived permanently in the back of my last 2 vehicles for many years with no spring base and no problems whatsoever. Have travelled some extremely corrugated tracks so if it was going to break, I reckon it would have done it by now.

If you put it on a spring base it will bounce around and crash into things. You would need ot protect other things stored near the fridge. Probalby by building a barrier areound it.

In the days when an SLR was an expensive camera a mate of mine had one damaged by being repeatedly bashed by a fridge on a spring base. We also had a fridge on a spring base mounted in one of the trucks at work. It also bounced areound and damaged other things. The fridge in both cases was fine.

Err Duncs,
You are still supposed to tie them down mate.

Used to have mine mounted on a spring base, because it came as a freebie with the fridge when I bought it.

Removed it when I attached a roller to one end to assist portability. Couldn't fit both.

But agree with other's comments. You don't need a spring base in modern vehicles.

New Engle the answer is NO , older ones ,the yellowish/cream ones YES the motor would bounce around a lot even on the tar and set up a constant / annoying rattle.

Ahhhh yes. It used to be most annoying having that clunking in the back of the Zook. Still it didn't do any harm. The 1986 15lt Engel is still keeping beer cold in the shed. :-D

Ok, I guess the masses have spoken. Thanks for setting my mind at ease and at least now I can start planning my storage system and fridge enclosure. All information is appreciated. Thanks.

One last 2 bob's worth!

I fit a piece of 30mm high density foam under the Evakool in back of the LC. Has the effect of holding the fridge in place more securely when it is dogged down with straps and IF there are any vibrations, it will hopefully assist in dampening them. It seems to work very well.
