Sounds pretty right to me. 80K is usually one of the bigger
services on a cruiser. Look in the book and you will probably see it includes tappetts and a repack of wheel bearings.
The old Live axle ones used to cost closer to $1,000 if everything was done correctly.

obviously they tore the 80,000k page out of the service book and didn't pin it to my bill - believe the 120,000k is similar, tappets, repack bearings diff oil replaced etc 5hr service ($70 odd bucks /hr) thanks dave

Hi Wado - I also do most of my
services, but the good mechanics do more than just 'turn a spanner'. It is all the 'little' things - For example tightening the Panhard rod bolts; or checking the breathers on the diffs, noticing that loose nut on the exhaust manifold or the drop of diesel at the back of the injector pump etc. I am happy to pay for the big
services (done by my mechanic)........Keith

All of them seem too busy playing with their keyboards ....and wouldn't know how to save a dollar..IMHO.....or do simple things on their units..

On page 39 of the warranty book is a list of the time Toyota charge for each service. HDJ100 80,000km= 4.9 hours.
there is also a list of all the items needing replacement and inspection.
For all Toyotas overcharging etc for parts, at least the dealer can assure you of the hours taken to do a service.

That's about the same for a Patrol for the major service.
But Giant Nissan in
Perth went one further; $1100 for the 80,000 service. Nearly choked.
Now that it's out of warranty, Nissan don't do it any more for me. That $1100 sealed it.

We use Robson Bros for our servicing.
Bokk the patrol in a few weeks before it is due and weget a courtesy car for the day.
And the pricing is alot better than a Nissan dealer, especially with the discount ExplorOz members get.

At a glance Brad, no one above raised the issue of "and was everything on the schedule done ?". Highly unlikely in my view - the $700 odd is reasonable in today's terms, but not when they skip time consuming service items (and most of them do).

Aint that the truth, posted on here a couple of weeks ago about tappets etc and asked my mate who works for toyota and he laughed, said they dont even have the tool to remove and replace the shims let alone touch them. Regards Steve M

Shims ? Tappets ? My all time classic vehicle servicing con (first person anecdote - me !) was on a service for our Jackaroo - they charged me labour for checking all the shims, alll achieved without removing the rocker box - there it was, detailed as done on the invoice ! That being the last straw in a line of issues at that dealer - now giving all dealers a wide berth - for some reason, a degree of fraud is a daily habit for many of them.

Brad,
I got an 80k service on a 1HZ 100s and it cost me a bit over $900
The only thing out of the ordinary I got done was to change the g/box - transfer oil.
This is not in the normal service schedule anywhere (up to 200k).I think $706 for TD is good.

I am continually amazed at how many of you blokes that still take your cars to the factory dealer for a rip off service, after all the most time consuming job is the oil change of the engine, diff and gearbox /transfer case, then greasing.
You'll find that the hourly rate will be more like $90 to $110 an hour from a stealer.
Go to a mechanic and get the same service for half the price and better quality service too.

Rubbish, warrenty is covered as long as it is an authorised workshop/mechanic and services are done at the prescribed time.

I agree,
Problem is that SOME dealers have used this line to wriggle out of a potental warranty claims regardless of who's done the service's,then charged for what work was carried out to the customer, then sent in the paperwork to the factory and get paid again.
good luck finding a good mechanic, plucking one from phonebook is fun 'cos you dunno how it's gunna end 'till it's too late

I am also constantly amazed by the number of people who just take their vehicle in and then get surprised by the size of the bill. LET YOUR FINGERS DO THE WALKING. Ring around and get some quotes 1st then front your dealer/stealer and tell him "I can get it done for this much", he'll come to the party pretty quickly.
Regards Andrew.

You can take your car to any Mechanical repairs workshop
All Warranty is covered so long as the service log book is stamped and signed by the mechanic
My father is a mechanic and none of his customers have ever had an issue with warranty claims during the warranty period
The only time you wont be covered by warranty is if you miss the first service or you dont get the service book stamped and signed !
The Dealers won't tell you this !
Just make sure to use Quality oils and service on time you wont have a problem guaranteed !

I have my 79 series serviced at 4WD Hire in
Queensland. I don't know if they are in SA, however they only hire out Toyotas and naturally that's all their mechanics work on. I had a service and some additional work done a couple of years ago for $1200. As I had the rest of the afternoon off I got a quote from Toyota for the same work - just over $3000!!. 4WD Hire may not use all genuine parts however they do a good job. For them to replace parts with cheap and shoddy parts would be counter to their keeping their vehicles on the road. Highly recommended and have not had a bad experience with them in three years.
