For those with fridge slides.

When you pull your fridge out, doesn't everthing else then fall into the area formally occupied by the fridge? Is the trick to have everthing else in a container to prevent this or some build a wall around the fridge to prevent this.

Currently, my fridge 40l engel sits on the floor and there is sufficient height to open door without moving fridge. I have a drawer to the side of the fridge and have a wall to stop soft articles falling against the fridge ventilation.

I have thought of reorganising the back and incorporating a slide to allow the fridge to be mounted higher and have drawer space below.

All diagrams and pictures of drawer systems and slides seem to say nothing about preventing articles blocking frisge ventilation or falling into space when slid out.

Alan
Essentialy with a slide you need to have the space for the fridge secured form everything else to avoid the "fall in" dilema.
It seems that where a slide is used then it is usually in conjunction with other storage compnents that stack or sit so as not to fall into the fridge space. Personaly I have a vertical divider on one side, a shelf above and the side panel on the other side. the space between the vertical panel, the shelf and the fridge is approx 40mm. between the fridge and the side panel is bigger, about 150mm which allows large things to slide in there. I used to put the stove in there and had a shock chord arrangement to keep it off the fridge. On the forn side of the fridge I have a 20ltr water tank and then the cargo barrier.

Our fridge is also mounted on its slide on the floor of the cargo section (Prado). This keeps weight lowest and also for us short people easier to get into the fridge. Friends of ours have fridge mounted higher and have to climb up on rear bumper to access the top. Not too hard but just an extra thing to do.

Good Luck

Hi

Oh No1 beat me to it.......yes put your glasses on you two and read it again!

Hi Wizard
All I know is that with our slide we have something big enough (not always the same item) in that area so nothing falls into that space when slide is in use. We are awaiting to design the cargo area when we have decided on how best to use the space.

Methinks that Wizard1 and I mean that this may be the start of THICK AS A BRICK week.

You build a compartment for the fridge to slide in to. This way nothing falls into the open space....DUH!!!!!

Number .5 is at it again. Fix your glasses. Muddy...Go back to work...lol

Alan,

Yes, most of us with sliders have a compartment around the fridge, or at least to the side.
I know others think this a dumb question, and it may be to them.
But then, some times asking what seems like a dumb question does get you onto a different track and a bright idea.

Watch those power cables too.

Hi Alan,

I'll give you a straight answer, like Muddy tried to do but got "talked out of it".

I don't do anything specific but also don't experience many problems in this area.
In my case, the fridge slide is built in flush with the top of the Cargo Drawer System so in effect it would be the same as a stand-alone slide mounted on the floor of the cargo area.

One thing I do is to make sure that the 12 volt power lead is secured out of the way. I do this by attaching the lead to the top of a hand rail positioned above and to the side of the cargo area. This enables the lead to operate in a pendulum fashion so that it does not become jammed behind the slide when you shut it.

On a rare occasion, we might experience a jumper or some other article dropping down and we simply remove it before shutting the slide.
I am not one to design a storage system where everything has a special place.
I would have a case of the screeming jeebies if I tried that myself.

Some people do and I'm not criticising their approach. I guess it gets down to how much storage space you have. With the camper trailer I have plenty so the cabin area remains reasonably "open". Fridge, Icebox sometimes, coats, jumpers and a couple of plastic removable drawers we sit on top of the cargo drawer system that contains the food, etc. Oh, and the doona and pillows end up in the cargo area as well so that SHMBO can easily get at them when we arrive home.
We tend to leave everything else in the camper ready for the next trip.

I have seen some amazing designs of storage space where only the cargo area is available and it obviously works for some people. These are usually made out of Qubelock tube and corner fittings.

Overall, providing you don't have a lot of small articles stored in the cabin area you shouldn't experience too much of a problem. Same with ventilation. Providing there is sufficient area around the back and rear sides of the fridge you''ll be OK.

And mate, I apologise on behalf of my esteemed ExplorOz colleagues for their abruptness.
They have been camping and travelling for so long, they forget other people may be new to the experience.

Hi Sandman

I never "got talked out of anything" so I don't know wat you mean there.........my answer to Alan was simple. I answered Alan's question with an honest answer, what we do to avoid things falling into the cavity that the slide creates when in use.

I wasn't abrupt to Alan in anyway, was I ???
My jest is purely with Willem and Wizard saying they needed to put their glasses on only to see that I spelt my reply to Alan with Wizard's name instead of addressing my post to Alan's name and my misspelling of Willem's name. Then my jest is with No 1 on that it was I not Muddy who was posting answers.

Anyway, my posts stand to be scrutinized.

Hi Sandman

No Probs!.....if I smile at the end.....all is good.

Unfortunately, I have to have Muddy's comp on during the day if I need to get online......too long to go into but basically techno boy never seems to find the time to look at my sick comp.......hence the MOH after the posts so everyone knows it's not his royal P.I.T.B. posting.

Never mind that bunch of yobbo's above Alan, they're from those mexican states, that should be enough to explain their behaviour lol.
Have a look here for what I did, I'm not sure exactly what you are planning/wanting to do in the rear of yours but you may be able to use some of these ideas.
The fridge runs on a Black Widow fridge runner.
If any of it interests you then have a read of post 24169 and any questions, fire away, I'll do my best to answer.

This is my prototype! Have changed the design since due to drawers being added. The slide is one I bought and modified by adding the cage.

Lots of people will build a plywood hutch to go over the fridge. They cover it with thin utility carpet glued to the ply so it looks like a bought one. This keeps direct sun off the fridge, and the carpet stops rattles. Just make sure the back part of your engel is reasonably well ventilated.

As far as the cord goes, extend the fridge out, then tie the middle of the cord up high with a piece of elastic or small shot cord - it will hold it up off teh runners, so the cord doesn't get caught.
