Can I please get a opinion of members who have travelled thru out the GRR/Kimberleys with regard to refrigeration. Some people have told me that it is best to use a Engel, driving a long! when stopping for the night put the camper on gas, they have also said that if you have a battery set up in your car to run the engel this will only last 2 to 3 days max.
Am I better of having a 3 way fridge, like a waeco/electrolux,so that driving along I am on gharge thru the cigarette lighter and when stopped put it on gas.
in anticipation.

Yendor, my choice would be genset/battery charger setup for the battery when not mobile. A fully dedicated electric fridge is more efficient than the duel gas/leckie jobs, not that there is anything wrong with them, my experience is that they don’t recover as quickly as a fully dedicated unit when they are opened, so if you have billy lids, the fridge might struggle at times. My set up is a Honda 20e genset which I run for 4 to 5 hrs of a night driving a 10 amp battery charger to restore the battery from day time running, all lighting, radio/dvd/tv, & a 27 y/o Engel, which I might add I bought when I was working out of Derby... so she has seen a bit of the Kimberlys & still goin strong. The Honda is as silent as a church mouse, I put it out at the front of the truck & in a very short time you would hardly notice it. I find it gives me so much more scope & flexibility for what I have now & what might be into the future. Cheers RG.

Solar battery is the go and no fuel or noise. $625 for 85w panel cheaper than $1300 for Honda. Forget gas fridge in hot climates or summer.

Hi Rod,
yes, lots been covered in the past on this.
I won't get into the arguments about types of fridges or genset/solar (I use solar) but really, one thing you don't need is a freezer (with the resultant saving of power). There are enough butchers at either end of the GRR (Broome, Derby and Kununurra) to provide cryovac meat, which can be kept at fridge temps (2-4deg) for about 5 weeks.
And a lot of veges can be kept for about a week if wrapped in newspaper and kept cool in an esky without ice, leaving your fridge space for other things.

Never mind the ice cream, what about the ice for G&T's at sunset?
Or the pineapple daquaris?

My point exactly , just because you may be out in the scrub camping it does not mean there is a need to forgo some of the little frozen pleasures of life. LOL.

Ahh but 1 decent fish aka "barra" is too much for 1 meal and being of the "waste not want not " generation a freezer becomes paramount.

Rod,
how long do you want to stay camped in one place ??
Yes, I've travelled the GRR, Kimberleys & kakadu, for months at a time.
