This article bought a wave of old memories back & a tear to my eye. I never thought I'd see a Tram at Bondi in my lifetime ever...Oh the relevance it's a 4x4, actually an 8x8....

Hey Basil (Fawlty)
That's enough to bring a tear to any old reprobates eye mate.
On Patrol.

PS; I arrived in Australia after trams wrongly disappeared but I often go to Loftus to see the trams anyway. I can recommend the Tram museum to anyone.

The old grey tram in the picture on the web site (the Brisy tram) brought back a few memories.

Used to catch a tram sometimes to school. :o)
Also remember getting the front wheel of the bicycle caught in the tracks sometimes and ending up going where I didn't want to go. :-(

And driving home along Ipswich Rd to get home, when the tram used to stop in the middle of the road to let people off, and of course the road rule was, tram stops , all cars stop to let people across. And dad mumbling under his breath. But then the race was on to get past the tram before the next tram stop. :-) Don't think modern drivers would survive with those rules.

Plodder, a friend of mine has in mint condition a pair of "last Tram" tickets from Brissy, It reached the depot apparently stripped of virtually everthing except the chassis & live electrical gear...They run Brissy Trams at Ferny Grove on Sunday afternoons...too nostalgic for me.

mr Fawlty ,
It brings back many memories for an old E.Suburbs man . One I can remember is of the cyclists hanging on to the back of the trams going up to Edgecliff from Double Bay.
Thanks ,
Willie .

Willie, I lived at Bondi & and Coogee, the eastern suburbs had some interesting sections of track, the earthworks & cuttings were amazing. My favorite was the run to Watsons Bay along the clifftops then down through cuttings and some serious curves to the terminus where the bus terminus is today...

Model railway stuff is extortionatley priced... Forget N thats cheap try G - $240 for a set of points...grandson wanted a big trainset... told him at those prices I could hand build him one at 1/4 full size cheaper...
Truckster, I remember going to Bommaderry in the stainless steel railcars...What about an N gauge Tin Hare?? I'm told there is a guy in Cooma makes them to order, they run a real Tin Hare from Cooma to Chackola, he is probably involved with that crew...

Arthur from local store runs G, but he owns a store... not bad $2500 for some of the G locos, and $500 for the cars...

Yup, remember stainless single car trains down past Kiama etc.. but I still have a spot for the old Rail Motors... Always wanted to go on one when I was a kid.

Now the ultimate would be a streamlined 38class in N, have seen a few 3801s on ebay for ... $900 US!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll never own one.

The stainless set was the South Coast Daylight Express ( commonly known as the Camel ) which was made up of Budd RDCs.

You can get RDCs in US road names in both G and N and for the last few months there has been a special through one of the US mail order companies offering two G scale RDCs for about $A300 a pair.

Been tempted to get two pair and run them a 4 car Camel set.

Amazing the memories this thread has bought back... As a kid we used to holiday at Broulee on the NSW south coast. On the property stood a large corrugated iron shed, inside the shed was among the other things a working tram, a tractor & a biplane. We were not that interested in the tram being city kids but the tractor was fun to ride on and the plane was never taken out.. The tram had a few hundred yards of track out to the boundary and the overhead wire was held up from the trees...Don't know what sort of tram it was, had a red bumper but was painted an olive green colour...I know Dad & uncle had to start a generator to get it running...Amazing where things turn up though, around the corner from me is a house and out front it has a letterbox made from an old cast iron box with "NSW Tramways & Railways" cast into the door, this place also had some tramtracks running down the driveway but they have gone now....

Stuff turns up on Ebay periodically and sells for more than the 2 crumpets got...
And I spied this ad for some used Aussie trams for sale, the prices quoted are almost what you have to pay for the same thing in N gauge...
