Hi there all,

Well I have 10 weeks off come July 07
My 4wd club is planning a 6 week trip from Sydney to Broome thru the center and Gibb River Rd. This leaveS (if my maths is right and no job offers happen on the way.....) 4 weeks comming back to Sydney

I want to spend a few nights out of that 4 weeks at Cape Leveque

The questions is which way back

via Savannah Way then down the coast
or down WA coast and across the bottom?

We will be towing a Camper trailer in our 3L TD Patrol.

Paul

Its simple

Going the Savannah Way you will stay in the warmer climes for longer

Going WA Coast and Nullarbor Way you will enjoy more cold weather

Your choice

I'm sure which ever way you decide, there's plenty of site seeing, you won't have enough time this trip to do it all believe me My husband and I have taken 6-12 wks in the past 10yrs each yr, just to do that and we still haven't seen a fraction of it all. You just have to keep returning year after year when you become addicted to the outback. Enjoy your holidays.

We've done both areas on our last two trips and both were good - some points to help you decide:

* will you feel like coast areas by then or outback areas?
* how much time will you have left? savanah way will not require as much time. We tend to go slower in the second half of a trip for some reason! there is a lot of driving to do the wa coast and then back to Sydney. you could end up with some long driving days to get home.
* we try to end a long trip with shorter drives and a bit more luxury so maybe coming across the savanah and down the east cost might be a good way of 'finishing' off ? you could always incorporate the bottom of the cape with a visit to cooktown up the bloomfield track if you have any extra time.
*the northern half of the west coast of WA and Karijini NP will still be relatively warm during the day - the southern half will be quite cold (we loved Esperence area but it was rainy and cold and not easy camping)
* we took 2 and a half weeks Broome to Melb via the WA Coast but really only saw the sights on the coast until as far down as Geralton - from then on it was a very brief overview. maybe consider only going half way down the coast then cutting across?
* the ocean was a nice change from the inland gorges of the kimberley area
* the savanah way was good but its main sights are the gorges of Lawn Hill so you might be 'gorged out' by then anyway?
* on longer trips we tend to pick the places we can't get to as easily on shorter trips

not sure if that will help your decision making process much but just some thoughts.

Places we liked in both areas:
* Cape Range NP - stunning ocean side camping
* Kingfisher camp - relaxing camping area, nice river
* A small camp ground called Leitchard Lagoons just out of Normanton - stunning lagoons full of birdlife - we went driving out some nearby roads through stations and the strings of lagoons and the birds were incredible. Also got some great advice from regular campers re barra fishing spots.
* don't buy food of any kind in normanton!
* caravan park in port douglas - glengarry ? i think its called. the big 4 outside of town is one of the most relaxing parks we have stayed at. very laid back.

Overall our favourite place to travel through is the kimberley and cape leveque so you have our favourite covered either way! Probably we enjoyed the WA coast more than the savanah way which found a little disappointing but it was still great to see and it all depends on what you are after and what works best at the time.

I hope you figure out which will suit you best - but either way have an incredible trip and enjoy the planning!
