OK the decision is needed. Decided to go down south for the Australia Day weekend.
Where is the best place to stay? there will be 2 familys with 3 kids under 3 in tow. Camping would be good.
Suggestions and ideas, I think the Mrs would want to stay in a caravan park with toilets and showers.

Doesn't really matter but if you haven't booked a spot now you may be too late.
When down there either in Canunda or Robe/beachport beaches stick to the permitted area and don't be an idiot. Of late they have been blitzing those areas and in fact I believe were almost going to shut access off.
They do surveilance from the air as well so be carefull and be Responsible.

Just checked a couple of places and all still have camp sites available.
Also I am not a fool when 4WDing and always stick to marked tracks, but thanks for the "headsup"

I think the Robe caravan parks are better, less wind swept.

Cheers

Beachport by a long shot.

1 day you go to carpenters rocks, then next day to robe - Beachport is in the center making life easier.

I took 20+ cars there on Melbourne Cup Weekend for our annual trip.

But expect it to be extremely busy, I know 5 clubs that have changed highcountry trips to Robe.

We stayed at www.parks-sa.com.au/soocp.html - walking distance to pub and shops. Clean dunnys, showers, and clean park.

Speak with Zig on here, hes in the Wattle Ranges (Beachport) 4wd club. Search for a thread I posted in Nov about our trip there.

They made the maps that everyone uses while 4wd holidaying in the area

Many of the adelaide clubs will be there as well. I know of two clubs staying at Beachport Caravan park - one of them has 28 vehicles. Its going to be a very crowded weekend.

Other clubs and 4wd drivers (responsible ones) always welcome in Beachport. Always good to be able to catch up with other ExplorOz members.

As Truckster stated Beachport more central if coming over from Vic.

I'll be at Ocean View CP for the Oz Day week with the Mt Lofty Club. It's usually chockers in there but surprisingly quiet when on the tracks and beaches. Trucksters point about the high country trips being cancelled is a good one, i expect Robe/Beachport will attract a bigger crowd this year.

I will definatly go with you Truckster-Beachport No1, and stay in the caravan Park thats not on the beach front, plenty of shelter no matter where it blows from, if my memory serves me right you turn left on your way in at the pub, then 1st right and follow your nose. There used to be a great little caravan park at Carpenter Rocks but apparently it changed hands about 18 months ago and the last report I got it was being subdivided into house blocks. The locals told me when I stayed there about 12 years ago it took ages for the approval to happen for a caravan park as it was a flood plain. I suppose a number of dry years and change of guard on their local council and this is all forgotten until we get a good rainy year again. Any way its all a great area, magic fishing- Crays-Abalone-Snapper-King George Whiting-Mullaway-Sweep-gummy&school shark-tommies- garfish-mullet you name it a great fishing 4x4 holiday area. Jeez you would reckon I worked for the tourist industry, can say I have no affiliation with any business or connection whatsoever, just good memories!! Regards Nick

I have heard it will be compulsory to carry three basic items if travelling the National Park tracks, First Aid kit, Sand Flag and CB Radio. Not sure when this will come in affect so be prepared. you should have these plus air comp snatch strap and shovel.

Thanks for the replies guys. Decided to go to Beachport I think it is the best spot can go either down to southend or up to Robe. Booked in at the Beachport caravan park for 4 nights. The lady said they still have plenty of room for that weekend.
Can't wait to get down there I love the place and have not had the 4WD of the black top for some time.
I was unable to get in touch with any one at Southern Ocean Tourist Park, they didnt answer the phone at all yesterday or last night so had to go to the Beachport Caravan Park right on the beach, just hope it doesnt get too windy!!

Have a great time, wherever you end up. Be sure to duck up to Robe though. Both are great little towns.

The drive through the dunes is great, though I prefer it a bit earlier in the season before it turns into a highway (do I sound too spoilt?!) when you can pull up at any of those fantastic beaches for an hour or three, raid the fridge & enjoy the view without seeing anyone else!

Not sure if Beachport has a beach you can drive on, but Robe's Long beach is great if you want some beach to yourself - just keep driving around till you find a couple of unoccupied beach!

I'm sure you'll all love it wherever you stay.
