I notice that a lot of the regional Police (in NSW) are handing in the Patrols and getting into...wait for it....Pajeros !! So there might be a few Patrols going through government auctions. These usually come up well equipped with bars & winches, and depends on the area- some have L/R fuel tanks, cargo barriers etc. Mostly well serviced.
So if you're a masochist- you may wanna check out the Auctions...

Darian,
I have a friend who just bought a 100TD auto from a dealer - no money to be saved by buying at auction. As you know the autos have all been $57k unless they have 110k on the clock. The manuals are a fair bit cheaper, but everyone wants the autos.

Darian,

Keep on eye on these: Australia wide.
Fowles

Pickles

I bought a HZJ105 3 years ago for $8k cheaper than any dealer could sell me one in similar condition for. I bought in January when competition was low, pre Christmas they were all selling for huge $$$. Ex Sydney Water, based in bankstown, looked like it had never been off road, 33k on the clock. 1 year warranty left on it but no issues since I bought it.

Good luck.

Re the SA auctions - a huge disppointment to me re the condition of some of the expensive Toyos - why they give bush bashers an $80,000 100 GXL I can't fathom - to a vehicle, they might have good panels, but the running boards can be crunched to the point of throw away (via rock crawling I guess), there is red dust in every possible cranny, the in and ex trim can be scratched and scuffed badly and there can be bright orange rust on rear-internal metal fittings !! (probably salt water encrusted gear just tossed in). The underside appears to have seen every km on the clock on rough bush roads - and the 04/05's with lower Km's still go for $58000 !!! - I know the various governments make a profit via no duty etc, but why not give these staff a base model ? Its a bloody public-purse crime !

A bucketload of toyo 4x4's come up for auction at

www.rossauction.com.au/

These are Perth / WA based and are mainly ex mining vehicles.

A mate bought an 80 from an auction of theirs. He chose from about 10 on the day.

He is still using it as nature intended and happy.

Darian, you answered the question yourself. The govt. departments make a profit when they sell the higher spec. cars, but not with the base model. That's why public servants can order virtually any model they want.
Keep the shiny side up

i hope not to many more off roaders are more concerned about on road performance than true off road ability, reliability, engine longetivity and proven performance in some of the harshest terrains this world has to offer,my last gq 4.2 had 670000ks of real 4wding on it from new and was running like a dream when sold.

You have travelled 670,000km of 4wd tracks???? Just how many of those kilometres were on-road? :-)

What we are talking about here is procuring a 4wd for those times that they MAY go offroad, yet has the ability to accelerate adequately, good fuel economy, comfort, etc. I would have to believe that they have done the figures, even taking into account resale value, and come up with the best package.

IF you are wanting a full off-road 4wd and nothing else, then there may be other options, however we are talking about the Police service driving them! Just how many would go off-road in any real form anyway? The regional vehicles would probably be more subjected to dusty, loose or muddy conditions if anything, rather than a vehicle requiring a higher wheel travel due to the solid axle etc.
