Warren,

If you are going "bush", Magellan's Great Desert Tracks software may be more appropriate for you, rather than the DiscoverAus Streets and Tracks software.

Not trying to scare you off mate. but you won't obtain all you need if your budget is $500. You may get the GPS unit with built-in base maps for that, but if you want to include more detail, DiscoverAus Topographic will cost about $399 extra, or the standard DiscoverAus $250, or Great Desert Tracks $275.

If you are looking for a cheaper and perhaps more flexible alternative, a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) with a GPS card and software such as OziExplorer CE (about $162) then add NATMAP Premium Raster Maps ($119) or Australia OutBack CD maps ($75) or any other digitized map you may wish to include.

As I said mate, I'm not trying to talk you into anything. I have a Magellan GPS with DiscoverAus and Great Desert Tracks on it, but prefer OziExplorer on a Laptop for my personal use. Other people swear by the PDA solution running Ozi. Just keep your options open and do some more research before you choose.

The Magellan GPS with the built-in maps and add-on maps as described above, will give you a real time "moving map" facility of where you currently are, but the display size is rather limited and the detail of additional features not all that brilliant.

GPSOZ is a great site to look at and as they sell multiple brand names of GPS units and add-on software that run on them, they will not steer you towards any specific "proprietary" product.

Good luck with your choice Warren.
Bill
