We're doing a trek in Tasmania next month, and would like to know for the intended route of starting at Devenport, through the north-west coast, through Arthur Pieman (including the punt) and through to Strahan, what sort of time would be typical?

Hi there,

It all depends on how many side trips you want to do along the way. 4-5 days will allow you to do most things/attractions on the West Coast, ending up at Queenstown.

Strahan is definitely worth seeing, as is Macquarie Harbour/Ocean Beach etc. But, BE WARNED, in and around Strahan you are a captive audience and you WILL pay for that privilege! I did the West Coast a couple of years ago now and fuel/food/accommodation/beer were cheaper in Alice Springs than there at the time. Zeehan is a more cost friendly place (but not by much). Queenstown brings prices a little closer to reality.

Having said that, if you have never been to these places, don't miss them, they are spectacular ;-)

Don't forget to have a look around New Norfolk if you are heading to Hobart.

Cheers,

Peter

Driving directly........less than 2 days.
Taking in all the great 4 wheel driving & attractions in that corner of Tassie........... 3 weeks.
I just looked up the meaning of "trek" & I assumed you meant driving not what's in the dictionary....."To walk great distance" or "To travel by wagon" :-)))
Cheers Craig.......

Well, yes, to drive it unless it throws a clutch into a creek, by which it then becomes the dictionary definition.

If you are just transiting accross the state you can pretty much go from end to end or side to side in 2 days but if you want to look around the west coast there are heaps of 4 wheel driving challenges & sights to see, many of which are in the "4WD tracks in Tasmania" book. We spent 2 weeks on the route you're planning & was far too short for a proper look.
Cheers Craig...........

Dont make the mistake a lot of people do coming to the little island and leave yourself short of time. Decide on how long you think, then double it!
Enjoy your holiday.
Cheers

We spent 7 weeks on the beautiful isle. With that, we spent a lot of time on the move, and had really only a 'taste' of all it has to offer. You could do a lap of the whole island in a week and miss just so much; some people have been touring for 4 months and not seen it all.

Don't overlook the fact that most places have a walk to the view, waterfall or what ever. This is good for your fitness (to burn of some of the glorious Tasmanian food), and makes a day trip out of a short distance.

We spent the first two weeks along the the north coastal strip from Devonport west, and still came back for a few days at the end of the tour for major places we had missed. We then spent a few days getting down as far a Zeehan where we based ourselves for 4 days or so, going to Strahan for the boat trip, Queenstown for the rack railway trip to Strahan, and a day in the Zeehan museum (in the former School of Mines). Strahan was too touristy, but the surrounds are don't miss stuff.

The tallest falls, the Montezuma Falls was a long but easy walk in (there is a 4wd track in - see Michelle's diary).

We didn't go down the Western Explorer road as we couldn't fit it into our time frame, and couldn't take our rig on the punt across the Pieman as we were too long.

My younger daughter used to take the Fatman punt across the Pieman for almost a year some time ago. She saw snow at Cradle Mountain in December.
