Hi all

Anyone been camping at Hill River between Cervantes and Jurien Bay recently? The info I have is that there should be water in the river, which we could use for showers? Is this true at this time of year? Also are fires permitted? Is the access track difficult (may have a forrester with us) and can you launch a tinnie off the beach there?

Any info greatly appreciated.

Brings back memories. Forty years ago in an Austen A40. No water in the river where I crossed but I never bothered to look around much. I heard someone was living near the river on some freehold a few years ago. I reckon I will wait for you to post all the info.

Hi Obee

I own a house in Jurien, but haven't lived there for four years!! Last time I was down that way the access tracks to Hill River were gated. The land is owned by Ardross and there is a private block there. The original track crosses the "Jurien/Cervantes" Road about 5km south of Jurien (just before the first big bend!) and this is where the gate is. There are some tracks that follow the river from near the bridge, but again I cant comment on access. A forrestor would make it all the way, but there is one main dune to cross just before getting to the river flood plain. Could be some problems getting it all the way to the beach though.

You could contact the Dandaragan Shire to ask about access. We used to be able to take the kids from the District High School down there to go camping, but things may have changed!!!!

Launching a tinnie off the beach would be OK in the morning with an easterly, but if the swell is up or the breeze is in (as it always is this time of year from about 11am onwards) then there are breakers on the beach.

Used to be much more fun before the Cervantes Road went in and there were hardly any people down there.

The other options, if they are still available, are to drive up the beach from Cervantes or to drive down from Jurien via the old "Booker" squatters settlement just south of Jurien. Don't know if these access tracks are still there. The beach can be deceptive and soft.

Good luck with the access..... the tailor fishing off Hill River can be excellent!!

Hi Tim_s

I was at Hill River 2 months ago. Roads and access in the area have changed but there is still access to Hill River.
A few Kms south of the Hill River Bridge on the new road between Cervantes and Jurien is a bitumen road that goes west to a new land estate. Keep going and it becomes a gravel road and it goes all the way to the coast. Non 4Wd vehicles can use the road to the coast. From there turn right and it’s a 4Wd track all the way north to Hill River.
We have visited this area many times over the last 10 years and have always found the river blocked from the ocean by a sand bar.
The best camping areas are north of the sand bar behind the dunes.
As for showering the river water is brackish and tea coloured – you decide.
Camp fires are dependent on fire bans as mentioned above.
A Forester shouldn’t have problems accessing H R.
Launching a ‘tinnie’ from the beach is also okay, I assume its a roof top job.
For something different take the track at the end of the gravel road and go south to Cervantes. This track is 4Wd only.
cheers
