Hi All,

I was just interested in finding out mainly from Patrol owners in Sydney but welcome any diesel fourby owners in Oz what the going rate is to fix a leaking fuel pump on 91 model Patrol. Its leaking from the back of the pump as well as the bottom so it will need to disassembled and all the seals will need to be replaced. At the moment the quote I have is for 1100$ being 650$ for the service of the pump and 450$ labour for removal & reinstallation of the pump. To me this seems a bit on the high side, but since I've never had this done I wouldn't know.

Also if any Sydney dwellers know of quality diesel mechanics that I could get in touch that would be great.

All feedback greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Vojta.

Vojta,
I am not in Sydney but have always had Diesels, both 4WD and much farm machinery. $1100 sounds cheap to me. I have seen thousands spent on injection pumps. I am guessing that the price is for remove/replace, dismantle and replace seals only. I would be allowing some extra if any further servicing is required........depending obviously on K's travelled etc. I would expect that to fully service an injection pump would be 3k+ again depending on many circumstances.

My thoughts only.

In Melbourne, a few years back I had a leaking injector pump on a '92 2.8D hilux. The Toyota workshops quoted approx $400 to remove & replace the injector pump and they would sent the pump off to a diesel mech to repair or do a change over estimated at $700 plus.

I found a diesel mech in the yellow pages, they suggested a change of reco injector pump for $700 fitted. Ended up paying $600 cash. They did the work while I waited, I even bought a new timing belt ($50 from Don Kyatts) and had it fitted by them as they had to remove the belt in the process.

Hi Vojta

Whilst the pump technology would obviously be different to the one in my 3L 01 Patrol. I recently had my fuel pump serviced at a cost of $2800. This was without any labour to R & R it because we did it whilst the engine was out for replacement.

$1100 would seem reasonable I guess.

I had one done for nothing once. 85 toyota 2.4. The fuel was leaking from the throttle bezel (does that sound right?) like the seal on the shaft into the pump had given up. Sounds simple enough but they gave it to a would be who bent something by putting it back together wrong. Blew smoke like no tomorrow.

If you get away with paying the amount you have been quoted I think you're lucky. Last year it cost me over $7 grand to have one replaced on my 3.0 litre Turbo Diesel.
