Further to my post # 41390, I have decided to go with a 40L Engel, and I need to know what plug others have used to hard wire their Engel back to the second battery.

The cigarette type power plug in the back of the car will be fine for when I have the motor running but when I turn the motor off the fridge wont run, so thats why I need to hard wire the fridge.

Do I fit a ciggy type plug with the appropriate size wire directly back to the battery, or is there a specific engel type plug I can use, cause I know that the standard 12V plug that comes with the fridge can break down from the ciggy type plug into a 2 pin plug and was wondering if this is a better option or is there more chance of damaging these type of plugs.

The best option is to use the existing Engel plug in the 2 pin mode with the Engel socket.

Cruiser

Use the Engel plug and, hard wire it back to the second battery using a 6mm line. Forget about the cigarette points.

Hi Cruiser
Go to your local Engel parts supplier and ask for an Engel ASPAN. Hard wire this to your second battery, using at least 6mm wire as a minimum, plus either in line blade fuse or what else you would like to use for a in line protection, as near as possible the the Battery. Unscrew the tip of your main power lead and screw into the ASPAN fitting, giving you a positive fit, that will not let you down even on the roughest of roads.

All the Best and enjoy your your great purchase.

An extra fuse is nessesary as the fuse at the battery end is not to protect the fridge but to protect the battery if the new fridge feed gets a short somewhere along its length !!

Also, can someone explain how they "hard" wire their fridge ? When you hard wire something, its soldered or crimped ? How do you disconnect it to remove the fridge from the car ?

Hi Davoe

This brings up an important subject. I'd encourage everone to go out and buy spare Fuses. You can get them in a box set now.

the Engel ASPAN or Engel 2 pin male to female is by far the best system. It will give you the best performance with the least amount of power loss through the plug ( resistance ).

The Engel comes with the 2 pin male. Just unscrew the cig adapter that is on the end of the 12v lead.

Keep the sucker in the bag for when you need it. I threw mine away thinking I would never be needing it and was proven wrong. I assumed that all in the club had ASPAN's installed.

I guess you've figured out that you need another fused cable coming from the battery pos tothe back of the vehicle - run it thru a firewall grommet and under the carpet to the rear.

I do something different.
I use Deans Ultra Plug for all my power outlets. These plugs are used in R/C cars and planes and spring loaded and made to cope with heavy currents. They are very compact, and don't come apart. I put a female plug on the end of the pos cable, and a male on the remainder of the fridge cable after I've cut it to length. Other people use Andreson Plugs, which are much bulkier, but can be surface mounted.

Similar to Phil, I also standardised the 12 volt sockets, but I selected the Merit socket.
This socket takes a Merit (obviously) plug, but also the versatile Hella plug which I have on all 12 volt gear. The Hella plug has a removable collar and can be connected to the Merit socket, or, with the collar attached, a cigarette style socket. And both plug and socket have a spring loaded locking feature which stops the plug from vibrating loose from the socket.

Very flexible solution.
