I have a Engle 40lt fridge ,
I always give it a good clean out and let air dry before I store it in the garage , the problem is usually when I get it out again it smells kind of musty . I keep it closed cause I dont like the idea of things living in it.
What do others do to keep their fridges smelling normal in storage , I hate cleaning it before and after use !
Thanks ,
Glenn.

Yep,
I agree, keep it open for one or two days, until all moisture has had a chance to evaperate.
I do the same with my icebox and have never had problems from smell or mould.

I leave some Bicarb Soda in
mine. It seems to keep the smell to a minimum.
Cheers Kev

Deodorant that I keep in

G'day Glenn,
After cleaning and wiping it dry, spray it with Vanilla Fridge Wipe.
Kills odours and smells good. Always store fridge with lid open a bit so air can get in. Nothing will live in it.
I hope this helps.
Crocks.

Me, too with the Vanilla Fridge Wipe !!!
Also handy in the Baileys/EvaKool iceboxes ..........
And also keep my Engels running on 240v in THE SHED, filled with 3litre juice bottles of frozen
water [ we call it ice, love!] which is perfect for the next fishing trip in the tinnie ...... and when defrosted, doubles as
drinking water for me und der Beagle!!!

Always store ours with the lid off in the store room under the house.
Give it a wipe out before we use it.
Use some lemon juice to wipe it out.

Myns on 24/7 was told better to run it then let it sit around. Sits under my pergola with nice coldies at the go. Not sure how true this is or wether it's more for the gas ones as have heard on here they sort of glag up and need turning upside down for a while to get them going obviously not an issue with the engels or waeco's. I just wipe myn out once a fort night with chux cloth and soapy
water. No problems or smells YET. Regards Steve M

I wipe
mine out when I get home and then put a stubby cooler in the front of the lid - keeps it open enough to keep the smells away - nothing growing in it either ;-)

Leave
mine on 24/7. Usually put a few bottles of
water, beers (when I forgo a weeks food inplace) and works sweet. I leave it on the 1 setting, and it cycles between 3.8 and 5 degrees depending on temperature (sits infront of a window)
Just had a look at the manual, and Engel recommends that quote:
"A suggestion is to utilise your engel as a second freezer/fridge or bar fridge at home during these periods (storage)"

We have an 80 ltr Engel, fairly new, which was used to keep seafood chilled for Xmas, somehow it was left with fishy smelling
water in the bottom for 2 weeks afterwards. Nearly knocked our socks off when we opened it! After reading about Bio-magic on this
forum, I bought a small bottle to try out in our Porta loo. Made up a brew per the instructions and poured about 1 litre of it into Engel, left it for 1/2 hr, wiped it out, now smells sweet once again, you'd never know fish had been near it.
We will be trying it out in the Porta loo in 2 weeks for the first time, will post results then.

Hi OS - we've just ordered a starter pack of Biomagic too. Mainly wanted to get rid of the "scenty" smells of the Portapottie and be able to empty it in caravan parks with septic systems, but am intrigued with the cleaning uses too.
Look forward to your feedback.

I do the same as you and only get a plastic type smell. Basically the same as a new fridge even from the one that is 10 years old. The main thing is to try and prevent spillage in the first place. This is particularly true for meat products. I get meat Vac Packed by the butcher. This helps a lot. If anything has leaked I wash it out with detergent two days in a row then let it air dry for 3 or 4 days. I know that sounds a lot but it seems to be how long it takes. If the air is very humid this may be contributing to your problem. I would resist the urge to use any strong bleach type products as it tends to damage the plastic surfaces and in the end just give bacteria another place to hide. Our fridges are stored closed but not in an overly hot area.
Steve

We've washed one of the larger of those trays that meat comes in from the
supermarket these days. All meat sits in it as we use the fridge as a freezer when travelling. That solves the meat juices in the bottom problem.
After trips, we wipe the fridge out, take the lid off and put the travel cover over it and store it in the shed. Never had any greebies make their home there. Just bring it in and freeze a couple of litres of
water to get the fridge right down to temp 24 hours before we leave.
Been fine for almost 4 years doing that.

I keep my 40ltr in a cupboard inside, to stop smells, I put a small piece of pencil eraser on the edge of lid, which keeps it open by an inch or so to stop smells forming.
Any small item would do, I just find the eraser fits without sitting on the seal.
