OK Guys, I leave at Easter for 3 months and am searching frantically for a hand winch. If anyone has/sees one available can they please let me know. I dont really want to spend $700 bucks on a new one and hope to pick something up around the $300 mark. If anyone has some "real" experience with the cheaper brands (Black Rat or Big Haul particularly) can they let me know....thanks

Drew,

either brand you mention are ok, make sure you have spare shear pins with a 2nd hand unit (they come std with a new one).

Depends on the size and weight of your vehicle you may need to add a ext strap, snatch block and a couple of rated shackles.

Drew,

I believe 4wd Megastore sell the 1.6 tonne Big Haul with cable for around $450 new. I have not investigated if this is cheap or not as I am not in a rush to buy one yet.

If you have a mate that goes driving with you regularly, why not split the cost?Just Do It!

Some time back Aust. 4wd Monthly did a test of the main hand winches available. The Big Haul came out the winner in that comparo. I picked mine up at a 4wd show for under $400.
