One for the Patrol owners who have done their exhausts.

I am looking at doing a power upgrade for the Patrol over the next couple of weeks and have been reading the many threads and making lots of calls - just getting more confused!

I get the Patrol serviced at ATOC in Melbourne and Aaron does a power upgrade that he claims everyone who has had it done is happy with. It involves fitting the Beaudesert 3" exhaust and dump pipe, closing off the blow off valve on the turbo cross over pipe, increasing the boost and adjusting fuel, setting max. exhaust temperature to about 650 degrees etc along with a few other tweaks. In addition, he strengthens the exhaust mounts on the Beaudesert system Cost is $1,900 fitted, including a digital EGT gauge fitted into the lower fascia.

Does this price seem reasonable? Exhaust itself is about $975 delivered from Beaudesert to Melbourne. Aaron reckons the exhaust itself will make a difference, however if you want the full benefit you need to do the other stuff.

Anyone got some suggestions?

as I said before, buy the dump pipe from Beauy, and get exhaust made locally will save you $100's...
Got my dump pipe here... waiting.. but our tall bald friend says he can get em made for dirt DIRT cheap but would need to order numerous.

$1900 seems expensive. (but makes the club discount price seem like gold!!!)
------
$1000 exhaust
$200 gauge
$700 to set the pump - can get rebuilt for round that.

Ask Andy at Diesel-Tek in lilydale also worth lookin at. These are the 2 that Im down to... just need $

If your going to spend $2000 speak with Darren at ATS in Geelong... His pushes 37inch MT's like they are 31's.

PS. Prices on exhausts if you supply your own dump were $500.
if they make it from scratch $750

Me thinks beaudesert are becoming "Your paying for a name"... good product, massproduced, should be cheaper.

Yeah, have heard that BD do the best dump pipe. Not sure about the BD system being too expensive - had a quote from Daalder at Dandenong for $995 fitted for a 3 inch system and dump pipe from AX Turbo. Gauge Aaron uses is more than $200.

So, $965 odd for the exhaust and dump pipe supplied, $300 odd for the digital EGT kit, $600 for removing the old exhaust, fitting the new exhaust (and modifying the mounts) and dump pipe, fitting the EGT kit, supplying valve plugs and assorted pieces, tuning and setting boost / fuel etc, GST. I reckon it seems ok. Aaron reckons it takes all day for him to do so labour would be a bit.

Will look into the other places you have suggested.

13 months ago the BD system was about $200-250 cheaper, that is a steep rise in price.........
When I helped JohnR do the exhaust on Moses the dump pipe took ages, it is a real SOB to get to, the rest isn't that hard.

NR has hit it. thats a steep rise. Im very disappointed, as I was calling them to order the whole system the other day... I had their last price I got off them a few mths ago still in mind, which they wouldnt run with.

Shop around even more, seriously, take the car into exhaust places and say, if I supply the dump, how much. The dump is all the work. I had 2 quotes of $500ish without dump...

I was talkin with AAron about his new digi gauge ages ago, he had some 2 in 1 thing, not sure if thats the same.

2 places I went didnt even want to look at it if they had to make the dump, which makes me think they will up the price to put you off, and if you accept, they make a motza.

Maybe see if you can get a better price for 2.. Im lookin'... Pretty sure I'll go with either Trufit in Moorabbin, Lilydale Exhaust, or Fastfit local.

YEMV.

Moggs, these guys who do a bit of work with different systems may ultimately have a done deal with some manufacturers but they generally learn who does the more effective systems, providing the quality for price, the strength and capability. I have a Beaudesert system I fitted myself. I noted at the time it gave me a 16% lower 0-100kph time which is a torque indicator of improvement.

Anyone who is looking to fit a bigger system on a Patrol or I guess other systems as well should understand that the dump pipe that allows the gas to flow quickly from the turbo exhaust is an essential part of the system. Don't proceed without a bigger one! They aren't cheap to manufacture but once again essntial.

Beaudesert did some discounted systems over a year ago to get more of their exhausts into the market. They deserve support for backing up their systems and I have no doubt some back yarders would like to think they can do as well. I doubt it. They may be cheaper but will they last as long?

I will be interested in what happens with the rest of the tuneup as I have said for a while I would like to do it to mine. I wonder what Nissan would notice on a warranty inspection? ;-)

>> may ultimately have a done deal with some manufacturers
Without doubt, its all about maximising profit and convienience. they are only 1 of 2 companies I found that do a "KIT" to fit yourself. Doesnt do the turbo tuner bloke any good to have to send the car away to fit a system and lose 1/2 a day for him and the rest of the job.

>> deserve support for backing up their systems
Why? they are just like any business with a highly priced item, and a name to support. I would support em if it was realisticly priced or they would discount. but it aint. and if they only discounted to get it out there, it worked, its out there, but now its over priced, your paying for a name thats "out there", it can stay there. YMMV

I asked if I bought 5 COMPLETE systems WITH dumps, what discount they would give... $20.00. YES Spend $5000 and you get $20.00 off. Blow me.

They would mass produce them, which would save em 100's to start with, buy their pipe in bulk, and have the templates to make these systems. How they cant be cheaper than others is beyond me.

> and I have no doubt some back yarders would like to think they can do as well. I doubt it.

Backyarders? I'm talking Fastfit Exhausts who did my first exhaust with extractors on GQ before the Denco, Trufit Exhausts who did Ad's Jack, and do show hotrods, Lilydale Exhausts, who has been recommended by at least 4 people on here, 2 diesel 'specialists' and is $300 cheaper than BD, just a bitch of a drive from here.... theres another one in Moorabbin south of Nepean I gotta sus out, bloke at work has all his work done there on his streetmachine Taxi... Under that theory BD are backyarders too. lol

Never read such a "justifying my wifes purchase" post in yrs ;) LOL

"Never read such a "justifying my wifes purchase" post in yrs ;) LOL" what crap you can talk Bruce.

Yes, you can pay more for the name where the quality backs up the product. Didn't you buy a Canon camera? Honda bike for yourself? Model trains too that you like?

Seems like you buy the good quality some times and eschew that quality others, if it doesn't fit your feelings.

The Bd system is a pretty good quality system and no everyone wants to get the dies to make their own if that isn't part of their business. No wonder others have to discount to enter the market. I work in another business that doesn't want to discount either, just as the business you work for doesn't.

You are as good as another guy who years ago told us how good solar panels are and he wouldn't listen to reason on those, just asseted their value - now buying a gennie. LOL

But you can pay less for quality, and not a Name... not often with the likes of super dodge etc...

But exhaust pipes are all made from the same pipe arent they? Unless its stainless. so eg 20ft from one place should cost the same as 20ft from others, unless they can buy in bulk whic BD would/should...

The reason I got the Canon, was it was partly a gift, the XR was only there at the right time, no chowfeed bikes then, like Cammo has, and the trains, are mainly Lifelike, some Atlas and Kato, and 1 brass that was bought for me...

But if someone has to custom make it, it should cost more not less - shouldnt it? hours of screwing round, welding, bending, hassles, etc ... put the pipe in the bending machine, hit the computer program and go.. I'd expect to pay more for custom work than off shelf.. ?

Stainless your talkin close to $2000 from one place. I never knew there was stainless 100carat Gold pipe...

I wouldn't use Trufit again. Went to the same place as Ads got his Jack done at. The system leaked from day 1, rattled. Had it back to them twice. In the end got a mob on the corner of Ferntree Gully Rd and Springvale Rd to fix it. They reckoned it was one of the worst exhausts they had ever seen. They had to redo every join. Just my experience, but wouldn't go there again.

Moggs, there is usually a reason for quality of the system. Price is frequently an indicator. What goes into the jigs that make the system, the strength of the welds, the steel of the pipe. It isn't all equal as some seem to assert.

Kewl info on trufit.. Bloke at works Mustang was done by them, and is a sweet looking and sounding system...

I'll go with Fastfit who I was pretty much sold on anyway... Happy with the GQ system, and they were the cheapest at $500!

If Lilydale was closer, I'd go there, thats where Lucy got his systems done.

What? If the dump is around $200, then that leaves about $800 for the rest of the BD system. So you are getting the exhaust done for approx. $400?

Getting Aaron to do mine on the 16th. Decided to pay the $$ and get him to do it as I have been happy with his work so far. Also, after a dodgy exhaust done on the Pathy I want some comfort that a decent system will be fitted.

Maybe could have mentioned you were a BD customer prior to launching into them ;-)

Well Bruce, if you want to get pedantic with numbers, then the DB system is $965 delivered to my door.

BTW, spoke with Andrew at diesel-tek in Lilydale today. For the same work as ATOC are doing for me he quoted $1,450 - $1,935.

Good luck with the exhaust. I hope for $470 you get a system that is as good quality as the BD system. For me, just ain't worth tempting fate. Much the same line of thinking that you have re: your approach to winches - you buy warn cause it is the best and won't risk a dud with an Ironman / T-Max etc. Strange that you don't apply that reasoning to other aspects of your Patrol???

Anyway, I'm done with this. Have made my choice.

G'day Moggs and all the best to all for Australia Day.

I had my 4.2 TD done just after Christmas last year here in Tamworth. My local muffler shop has been doing the exhaust for years and the best diesel shop in town does the dyno and tuning after the pipes and dump have been done. I paid about $1200 for the job and I am very impressed with the result. An extra 20 hp at the rear wheels - 95 before and 115 after. Has changed the Nissan into a nice vehicle to drive now - actually gets up and goes. Might hafta get Cruise Control next.
No gauges with my job but I'm happy.

Best of luck

ROFLMAO. "Blast away at traffic lights" in any 4x4 that weighs in close to 3 tonnes. Hehehehe. Thats what I had a Mazda RX2 for way back when petrol was 17c a litre.
No way do I want the "Agressive Power" for burning off Doof Doof cars at the lights in Tamworth Willem. More often than not the Nissan is used to tow a CT about the place and like Moggs I enjoy the ability to not have to change gears for each hill that I might find. And I look fwd to getting out in the bush at every opportunity. Wuith my work I spend lotsa time working in remote parts of NW NSW and look fwd to getting back to many of thesed places in my 4 x 4 with the CT and friend and staying for extended periods

Cheers
