Hello All,

Just wondering if any 90 T/D have experienced what I am at the moment.
When towing my Jayco Camper mostly up hills, more so when the weather is hot the temperature gauge is going through the roof. Have already had spent a small fortune at my mechanic who has serviced the car from new. He has had the radiator checked, replaced thermostat, oiled the fan, replaced hoses, checked co2 in the water (checking for cracked head), cleaned the dirty air con condenser. the only thing I can think now is maybe the water pump or the fan is faulty, crack in the head has not been detected or maybe the Auto transmission is getting hot causing the problem when under load. It is going in for 200k service tomorrow and to try and rectify this problem. I have also a DP chip that I was wondering if this was adding to the problem but have illuminated this as whilst the Prado was getting so hot I removed this as it is in my glove box and very easy to remove and made no difference. The car runs perfectly normal when not towing. Any information from some one who has had a similar experience would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I am not a mechanic, but. Does your 4WD have an auto trans cooler, or extra auto trans cooler? We used to have an auto Jackaroo and fitted an auto trans cooler with the intention of helping the transmission when working for extended hot periods in sandy country. Holden & others said we didn't need it but we fitted it anyway. I was a bit concerned about what would happen with engine cooling because the cooling radiator thingo for the auto trans was placed in front of the aircon & engine radiators. What I found to my surprise was that the engine ran quite a bit cooler after the auto trans cooler was fitted. Incidentally I am pretty sure the Jackaroo already had a smaller auto trans cooler as standard somewhere below or behind the engine radiator, and the new auto trans cooler was fitted IN ADDITION to the original one, rather than to replace it with a larger capacity unit.
All work was done in Adelaide by Rowell & Searle (AKA Campbell & Hewitt) Ph. 08-8223-1844, who have been in this type of business for as long as I can remember (over 50 years) and are endorsed by our local motoring organisation the RAA. The guys there are really nice and I am certain they would be happy to spend 5 minutes with you on the phone even knowing they have no chance of getting your business, you being interstate. I guess.

Arkay,

Yes it is on the list to talk about tomorrow when I take it to the mechanic and yes I'm am interstate rom Sydney. The thing is I have had the Prado for 4 years and this has only just started to happen in the past few months. Bugger of a thing as it only happens when towing up hills and with higher ambient temperatures.
