Ok so the 4by is coming home. Me and a mate are gettin a train up and was wondering, on the trek from M (which i have renamed it as im sick of saying/spelling it :P) back to Sydney is there anything you guys reccomend doing/seeing?

Seems like too good a roadtrip to spend all of it in the car.

Cheers, Anand.

Hook a right at Grafton and travel the OLD Gywder highway through the tunnel and great country.

Then when down near Armidale go in towards New England National park and down through the Styx River area.

In fact a check of maps will allow you to go down to near Syndney without any highway travel if that is your intent.

Watch fuel range if you are new to the vehicle!

But have fun and enjoy the new vehicle.

We are heading for Sofala via Armidale next Monday, was that tunnel on highway 38
or the Glen Innes To Grafton road ?

Big Al

The tunnel I refer to is on the OLD Grafton to Glen Innes road which is dirt not the new highway over the top near the National Park

Upon leaving Grafton for Glen Innes have to hook a left about 10km out. The road follows the Mann/Boyd River along for about 20km and goes through a very short tunnel at Dalmorton (place not a town)

The old road is a scenic change to the bitumen. Will be slower but interesting country.

Moo Bah is only a breath away from the Gold Coast, or the quaint villages of Kingscliff et al. Worth a peek a boo.
You can also watch them roll up the roads at 5pm in Moo Bah , I mean there's life, Jim , but not as we know it :))))))))

Ain't that the truth, Footie. Although, one night driving home from work, I did see a house light on ;-)))

Mr Newbie, if you're feeling energetic you could check the view from the top of Mt Warning. It takes quite a few hours so if you don't start early, take a torch!

Nothing quaint about Kingscliff or the coastal "villages" anymore.

Its fast becoming the southern end of the gold coast.

flappa, it was tongue in cheek. However, anyone who has tried to negotiate the traffic impediments , or wander along with the beach traffic, might think it "quaint".

B'Ware, a house light on ? Surely not. Sounds like the night they forgot to turn the electricity off at 7pm. LOL

I actually like the more modern Kingscliff and southern "villages" , heavon forbid.

I lived there when it was a village and personal dont mind the "improvements"

Hi

The Tweed valley is great. Take some time to check it out especially the valleys south of Murwillumbah.

Take the road to Uki and stop at the Mt Warning Hotel in Uki. 20 years or so ago there used to be magnificent photos of bullock teams hauling huge rain forest logs. Hope they haven't been removed and lost.

Climb Mt Warning, terrific!

Go past Uki about 4 to 6 kms turn right across a creek and take a road around the back of Mt Warning to Tyalgum. In Tyalgum look north up to the border ranges. The Stinson plane crashed up there before WW2, Bernard O'Reilly walked 36 hours in cloud to find the wreck and save 2 survivors. read the book Green Mountains by O'Reilly for more information. Continue back to Murwillumbah on the Tyalgum road.

Heaps of other things to do check out the Tweed tourist information centre.

Cheers
Phil

Next suburb over -- MOOBALL - think the pacific now bypasses this town - its novel in the fact that everyting is painted like a cow- apart from that the rest is just a road trip to the various beaches along the way

Wow... 1630kms, 31hrs... 2-3 hrs sleep... no-doze, coke and cigarrettes... I got home an hour ago. Ended up goin up with a good mate (we drove in shifts and had frequent rest stops before anyone asks) who had work on tues (today). Had a ball... Knowing me, had the usual many hiccups (ha!)... Sadly we didnt find Ace tho, but he is chipped so we only hope that he does find his way home :( It was a beautiful, scenic drive (mostly down the pacific highway). I'de like to get into the nitty gritty but im too damn tired... I will tommorow (well later today). Really opened my eyes as to what was out there (and all still in NSW!). Ill get some snaps too, some of you will get a laugh about how it came back... I know most of my mates did, and will when they see it in person... Sadly the sound system is broken :( Smelt petrol, oil, or similar in the boot and i dare say it found its way down under the seats where about $900 worth of amplifiers live. So we got home singing our own renditions of "The pub with no beer" and "Sweet home Castle Hill". So far, the best, if not easily the most stressful experience of my youngish life. All will be revealed tommorow :P

Cheers, and goodnight.

Anand.
