Folks we've only lived here a few years: we actually rejected a nearby place 5 years back, on the grounds of cicada 'white noise torture'.
This year we're really copping it.
Any comments?

Someone with more knowledge the I will (hopefully) be able to tell you the exact details but there are two reasons you get a lot of cicada noise.
1. The number of cicadas is to do with rain at the right time of the year assisting with hatching.
2. The temperature has to be above a certain level before they start to scratch their back legs against their wings to 'sing'.
Year round no rain and cold weather or a move to a cool climate should fix the problem :-))

I may be way off track here, but apparently the noise you are experiencing only occurs every 5 - 7 years. Something to do with the breeding life cycle of the things. We had been
camping at our favourite spot in
vic high country for years then one christmas we couldn't hear each other talk the cicadas were so loud. At the end of the trip our ears were still ringing on the way home. Spoke to locals who explained the cycle. Sure enough, next year was peaceful again (just the usual low level cicada hum)...

Cicadas have breeding cycles - it's a global phenomenon. In 2004 I was in Maryland, USA in the summer - they have a small variety of cicada there that has a 17 year brood cycle. It's like a 17 year plague, and 2004 was the year. *Crazy* numbers of the things. There are other broods in between the 17 year cycle with shorter cycles and smaller numbers, but the 17 year cycle is of biblical proportions.

I have Cicada Tinnitus in my head. Not a nice thing to experience and there is no cure. But it dissipates when one is thinking.
Come to think of it, I can hear it now, so I can't be doing much thinking whilst here on EO....LOL

I suffer from the same thing Willem. I find that sex relieves it very
well.
30 seconds of relief every fortnight isn't much, but it helps.

Norm's probably not married Michael. We all know that married men don't get any :-)
Anyhow, I haven't heard cicadas in my part of
Sydney for a few years. Pretty sad really. It's one of those "happy, summer" sounds.
Yeah, I've got a bit of that tinnitus too like Willem. Maybe that's why I can't hear them!!

Norm's success is due to the fact that he has only just returned from his honeymoon .
Anyway Norm , look on the
bright side , it's regular .
Gee John , the cicadas have been deafening at Epping this summer.

John ,
I'm buggered if I know . Some years we have none too . We never see Christmas Beetles ever and they used to be everywhere when I was a kid .
Anyway , I have a huge frog pond in my backyard and they supply the noise at night , so I don't feel deprived if the green grocers don't show up .
Willie .

Jeff, as others have said its worse some years than others. There is but one cure, and that is to find something that drownds the sound out.

Oops went to spell
check and hit wrong button. As I type the sick addas are chirping away here.
I've found that some sounds are better than others at drowning them out.
My missus is pretty good.
The Grateful Dead turned up on the stereo (geez I hope they're a real band or someone will be sure to rubbish me).
The sound my keyboard makes when typing is pretty good also.
Willem says thinking is good for it.
Not thinking is probably better.
But the best relief is to go on holiday.

Hi Jeff,
Has anyone actually tried taking their speakers outside, warned the neighbours and then given the little buggers a taste of their own medicine at 300 decibels ?
Another potential solution from outside the box is those scare air guns. Don't know their proper name but they use them in orchards etc to scare the birds off. Powered by compressed air I believe and all they do is randomly let rip with a loud bang.
PS: If you are near one of those air guns don't drink booze ... you may find your occupational reflexes will deposit you in the nearest dead ground or behind something solid ..... lol
Cheers ... Taz
