Hi all,
Wanting to upgrade to a digital video camera but I understand that you are unable to charge the battery from a 12v source. As battery doesn't run for a great deal of time -the one supplied with the JVC I'm looking at is 1 hr only-would need to recharge often.
What are the options when away from 240?
Generator?
Inverter?
Thanks,
Mary

I use an inverter for all battery chargers - simple, easy one size fits all approach, but I would be surprised if there were anything particularly stopping you charging from 12V and I would be surprised if JVC didn't have a 12V charger in their accessories - although it might be hard to find a stockist - may have to be a special order.
There are after market 12V chargers that have a universal adaptor that are available from
places like the Battery Bar www.batterybar.com.au/ - I know that they will ship phone orders to you.
You would need to be precise about the battery and they will be able to sort you out.
Cheers
Andrew.

Inverter is what you need Mary. You can be charging the Video battey whilst driving, the Inverter plugged into the Ciggy socket.
Anything bigger than 300 watt and you would need to have a higher capacity circuit installed.
Nothing fancy required. Just a modified sine wave Inverter (300 watts is a good choice for most things) from Jaycar, Dick Smiths, etc.

Hi Mary,
Sony have a cigarette charger for their digital cameras. You plug it into the camera's battery charger socket and into the vehicle cigarette lighter and it charges when the ignition is on.
I know there are generic brands for all types of cameras.
Check out your (large) camera store for one that is suitable for your JVC. Alternatively give the JVC people a ring.
Cheers

Mary,
I have a JVC Everio video camera and found a generic brand 12 volt charger which plugs into the cigarette lighter in the car. JVC recommended it to me as there was none made by JVC at the time. I bought it at the same
shop I bought the camera at, which wont be any help to you as it is in
Sydney and you are in Vic! I don't know the brand off hand as I am at work but will post the brand name if you wish when I get
home later on tonight.
Cost wise you wont beat just getting a 12 volt charger as opposed to buying an inverter. I was advised by JVC that you should not use a modified sine wave inverter for the charger that comes with the camera. I was advised if I went down that road I had to have a pure sine wave inverter so I did not void any warranty on the camera. A pure sine wave inverter will cost you more than the recommended 12 volt charger.
What I did was bought the 12 volt charger and an extra 3 hour or 4 hour battery so that I had a spare battery other than the original one that came with the camera. This will be a lower cost than the pure sine wave inverter.
The charger did take a while to recharge the battery but I guess that is the nature of the battery and charger as compared with the 240 volt one.
I would recommend buying the extra battery and the 12 volt charger as opposed to a pure sine wave inverter, that was based on my research and questions to the JVC techs prior to buying the camera.
Did you buy an Everio one? If you have, have you had any dramas with the editing software?

Haven't actually purchased yet.Was looking at a 30G hard drive type at Harvey Norman and that is where I was told wouldn't charge on 12v.Will go to a dedicated camera storeand
check.Would prefer the 12v option if possible and yes an extra battery is a good idea.If you could post the brand name of the charger that would be great.

The name of the charger is Hahnel. The model I got was MCL103 which suits a JVC 30 GB HDD (GZ-MG37AA) plus some other JVC batteries. The extra battery I bought was a 1400mAh one (BN-VF714U). It is about twice the size of the standard battery (BN-VF707U). If you get any bigger they become heavy and make the camera hard to handle.
The Hahnel charger uses 240 volt or 12 volt cigarette lighter attachment. I bought all my stuff from the good guys.
hope this helps.

Hi Mary:
I was able to source 12v rechargers for both my Sony Video Camera and her Olympus digital camera from eBay at very good prices. Just do a search when you load up eBay. These were a lot cheaper than what I had been offered in Oz. So far they are both working
well.

You can also charge them from a 5watt or 10watt solar panel, these only put around 0.5 to 0.8 of an amp so very safe to charge your batteries with one.

My 10 watt solar panel has aligator clips, what i did was buy some bullet elec connectors and plugged them into the + & - holes of the battery and left them for a few hours and hey presto charged.
I found out about it by accident, forgot the charger that we normally use and out of desperation we tried it and it worked, so this is how we do it now.
I got my solar panel from Supercheap.

Dont do this with LI-ION (lithium ion) batteries. They are very voltage sensitive and if charged at over 4.2 volts per cell can explode and catch fire. Remember last year a lot of laptops all over the world were exploding. Faulty LI-ON batteries.

G'day, I have a JVC Digital Video Camera. You can recharge any battery if it is re-chargeable. I recharge the batteries from AC when
home and DC on the road. The charger that I have is suitable for the JVC BN-VF707U, BN-VF714 and BN-VF733 batteries. There are heaps of choices. I bought
mine from eBatteries I also bought some extra batteries from them. Best choice I could have made.

Hi Mary, on some trips I carry up to three digital video cameras, a digital still and a computer and the simplest and most cost effective way for me to charge all the batteries for this gear is to use a 120 watt modified sine wave inverter.
I’ve been doing this for over 20 years and never had a problems.
Cheers.
