Hi All,
Well the cruiser is finally in for the much awaited diesel gas conversion. So I will keep you informed about how it goes, at the moment its only a NA 1hz. But if gas isnt enough then it will be a 4.2 TDGI Ihz(Turbo diesel gas injected).
Stay tuned
Matt

Matt,

You won't regret this. You'll love it.

I did it the other way 'round. I had a turbo put on 4 years ago and had the gas thang done about 4-5 months ago.

Putting the turbo on was like 2 extra cylinders. Putting the gas on was like an extra 2 cylinders on top of that. It runs a heap smoother too.

Cheers

Ditto that. My son has had his done recently to his 100series 1HZ safari turbo.

Smooth, tractable and quiet. Why would you bother with a V8 guzzler??

Hi Stephen,

I see form your profile you have a long range sub tank fitted, so where did you install the gas tank?

What range does the cruiser have now between fill ups? It must be massive.

Dustin,

I had 2 x 38 (or39) litre tanks mounted longitudinally between the chassis and the sill on both the passenger and driver's side. In essence they sit pretty much under my and my wife's bum.

I didn't lose any underbody clearance as the tanks are about the same level as the crossmember under the transfer case or the muffler. I can take a piccy tomorrow if you're interested.

Range is circa 2,000 km. Cool eh?

Cheers

Hi Stephen,

I'd love to see a few pics, if you don't mind.

I just had a look under my cruiser and think that the stell work holding the side scrub bars might get in the way.

Also, I see that my silencer / muffler is fairly dented from the last few outings are you worried about then tanks taking a knock or getting dented from rocks? How dangerous is it if the tank got damaged?

Do you think you are exposed from a side impact?

Where did you get the job done? Are you based in Perth?

(Apologies for the many questions)

Cheers.

Hi Dustin,

I hope the images work:

Side view of 1 of the tanks.

View from the front of one of the tanks.

View from the front of both tanks.

Rearward facing end of tank(s) with valves and guages.

View from the side of both tanks.

Scrub bar steel work would most probably interfere with the mounting of the tanks.

The tanks have guards protecting them. I dont seem to have a problem with them (or anthing else) bottoming out or scaping. Maybe your L/C isn't as high as mine or you go a lot harder than I do.......

I maybe more prone to side impact but am less prone to rear impact.

I got the job done through Lovato DieselGas in Malaga (3 or 4 mins away for me so it was quite convenient). They supplied the gear and the installation was done by someone else (which they arranged).

If you want a closer look, you're welcome to come and have a gander at my setup.

Cheers
Stephen J.

I'll try again:

Side view of 1 of the tanks.

View from the front of one of the tanks.

View from the front of both tanks.

Rearward facing end of tank(s) with valves and guages.

View from the side of both tanks.

Thanks for going to all that effort, I really appreciate it.

I might give : Lovato DieselGas a call and maybe take you on on your offer for a look at your set up.

You are probably about 30 minutes away from me.

Dustin,

No problemo.
I'm home on break at the moment, but I'll be away from Monday morning onwards.

Give me a call on 0407 193 101 if you'd like to arrange a look before Monday.

Cheers

Hi Matt,

I'm very keen to follow your progress and to hear how it all goes.

Your 80 series has a decent gearbox and can handle all the extra touque, I am a bit worried about my 100series 1Hz with the R151 gearbox. I am not sure it could handle a gas converson and a turbo or even one of these on their own.

Are any adjustments needed to the fuel pump after fitting? Are you have egt taken before and after? Just curious. How about a dyno to check and mearurable the power increase?

The place were you are getting this conversion done, have they done many diesels?

Good luck.

Hi

I have Dieselgas fitted to my Patrol 4 cyl 3 litre TD. More than happy with the results.

I wonder if anyone has "before and after" dyno numbers as I would be interested to see the improvement in HP and torque figures. Mine certainly seems to develop more torque and lower RPMs.

good luck
Cheers

Gday Phil

Had mine dyno'd and went from 84 to 96 kw 14%. They could get more if I wanted, but if you put too much gas in things can go a little badly. Cost $95.00 for the Dyno, not bad, just give it a run with the gas on, and a run with the gas off. It was cheaper than I thought (ultimate fuel injection near the airport in perth)

Has anyone out there done this to a GU 4.2TD and does anyone know of a place near Sydney to get it done.

Thanks

I have a GQ 4.2 TD with a Safari Turbo. I got the LPG about 4 weeks and I have driven it for 500km.

They told me that they have set it up with the mild profile, so more economy than power, but I can feel the difference. As somebody said, it is like having 2 extra pistons. Economy wise, I am not sure yet, since I have not refuel.

I have the 35lt tank (28 useful LTs) under the right passenger. I was not happy how low it is. Even though, it still is over the diffs, it is pretty low for rocks. Also I was not happy with the protection of the tank. The metal sheet does not cover the front of the tank. It is not curve at the front, so it may become like a spoon in sand and mud. I am fixing it by making the metal protection sheet look like a boat, so it will cover the front of the tank.

The only way I can gain more clearance now is with a suspension lift. My argument to my better half to get the LPG conversion was to save money in the long run. I am sure if the same argument will work for the 2" suspension lift!!

I have been toying with the idea myself with my 80... I have heard that the amount of gas being injected is little more than a trickle so you only need a small tank to go for a fair distance...

What size tanks seem to be the norm? and what are the size tanks in the pics under the seats?

The whole idea sounds great..

As far as power goes I have a 1HDT so I have pretty much got a fair whack of power there anyway so I am not overly concerned about that side of it and am more interested in what sort of fuel economy changes you get afterwards..

Keep the comments coming guys.. all relevant for those of us still considering it!

Cheers
