I'm in
Darwin and have just finished work. When I arrived at the airport yesterday Avis could not supply my booked car and upgraded me for free to a Nissan Xtrail.
There must be some dirt around I can go play in near
Darwin! It would be a crime to have a 4by to play in and not get it muddy. Here I go looking ....

Don't forget that it is a real 4by and doesn't like working hard in sand
Have fun
Cheers Kev

Hey it is a hire car and it does drive all 4
wheels!
After 48 hours of driving it they can keep it.

Keep your mobile phone charged all the time as you will find many of the Top End tracks bottomless at this time of year. I wouldn't call an X-trail a 4by...LOL
I have a mate up there who could take you someplace you can get bogged. Just email me through my website.

meant to say it is a rental - you can take it anywhere most normal 4WDs can't go.

Yes, rentals can go anywhere, almost as far as a company car.

Hmm,,,,,,I know we all knock XTrails, but a
young lady freind of
mine just came back from the sandunes around
Lancelin in WA and astounded everyone there by going over the dunes without a hitch, Even one where a 'Cruiser got bogged! And she's a rank beginner at this lark. She thought she didn't stand a chance against these big macho types with big 4bys - but she quite surprised herself!
And no smartarse comments about "
young lady friends", thank you - this one is my wife's boss and 30 years younger than me!

I think you'll find in the small print that if you bend it off-road or cause any underbody damage whatsever there will be no insurance cover if the vehicles from a hire company like Avis or any 'non 4WD hire company'.
I met a couple of German tourists at
Rainbow Beach a few weeks ago who had driven there in a hired Subaru Forester from Europcar. They wanted to take it to Fraser Island but had no idea about airing down tyres or even how the 4WD system worked. I tried explaining to them that the hire company may have issues if they took it off-road but their English skills (and my German) werent up to it.

Once up a time we use to play at Dripstone, Casuarina and beach, Holmes Jungle and RAAF Bombing range etc, all 5 minutes from the centre of the city.

Well I found a nice little 4wd playground just behind East Arm where the big golf ball radar thingy is.
I didn't bend it, but it is a little muddy!
Cheers

Wouldn't buy one for a number of reasons.
But as a soft roader it isn't too bad at all. Handled the muddy tracks OK and I had a lot of fun. A lot better than some of the little wannabees out there.
