Any suggestions for a swag that would be suitable for the Northern Territory.

With only two weeks to go before we move to Jabiru I would like to take up a good swag.

Although I am not sure I want to move now. The packing and organising is eating into my drinking time. lol

Go here:

www.grangerscampingworld.com.au/

"Tents" - "Swags" - scroll down - "Mitchell swag" $230.

I've had one for a couple of years - excellent in all conditions from -5C to +45C.

And yet another vote for the Oztrail Mitchell. Quick to set up and very comfortable.

If you shop around you should be able to get one in the sub $200 range.

Laura

I have checked their web site but no mention of inflatable matresses.

Might have another look or send them an email tomorrow.

Thanks Boo Boo

Mr Boo ,

I can say that I have never seen a swag to rival the Ultima tent swags . They are a rectangular cross section with mesh on both sides and the top - great for hot weather and mozzies and you can put your boots and clothes down at your feet . If it rains you pull a big hvy duty canvas sheet over it which zips into place .

You can tie one end to the bull bar and the other to a tree .

They are the best I reckon , but they are also big money . The guy that makes them is ex army and makes them like a brick outhouse .

Even my wife loves sleeping in her Hilton model !

Cheers ,

Willie .

I have a double Discovery (doesn't leak) swag from Ken Major, a company based in Adelaide.
A few of the Outback touring companies use them.

A very good product, they also sell seconds.

Can't go past a Darche swag. Made in Aus (just out of Shepparton) and probably the best around. Prices aren't bad either. Alternate entry point is a good idea.

Unless you can sew canvas and are prepared to make a few to get it right - which is more than it'll cost to buy a decent one in the first place - you might as well buy a good one and be done with it.

We've got AOS Deluxe Swags - in both doubles and singles and can't fault them. Have camped from desert to beach, hot climates to cold. Having lived in Darwin for a few years, I'd recommend a swag that offers full length flynet - and hoops top and bottom to keep the fabric off your skin. Good luck with the move.

Hi Boo Boo.

I have found the best swag is the one you get made for you by a good canvas bloke.
Bit more expensive. But you get want you want. The mattress is the most important part, second come water proofing.

Looking at some of these sites. It would be easier to set up a tent.

Its been a little while since I moved out of my swag. But I though the reason for a swag was the little space it took up and ease of getting into it.

Using one of the above mentioned on the stations I have worked on, you would get some good laughs.

Rob ,

It takes 30 seconds to tie one end of an Ultima swag to the bull bar and the other end to a shrub .

I doubt if Mr Boo cares if some station hands feel his swag is over the top . He will have the last laugh as he looks up at the stars listening to the frustrated mozzies swarming around him .

know what you mean Rob, some of these "swags" are bulkier than a family frame tent including s/i mattress without the accommodation capacity

Everyone has different ideas for swags but no matter what type you settle on I would personally make sure it has a PVC bottom in it.
Stops moisture
Says reasonably waterproof when rolled up
Prickles and grass seeds dont stick to it
And its easy to wipe off if you have to take them inside your car or someones house

Cheers

Fellow Forumites

Your suggestions are going to take some time to get through, but thankyou very much, you have been a great help.

My wife and I have been teoNewcastle, Central Coast and Sydney over the weekend saying, seeya later to our friends and mother in law,,,, that was the best fun. Anyway I stopped at Kangaroo City at Tuggarah and the down under range was fairly expensive with some costing around $350 upwards. Many of the one's you have suggested can be obtained online, Aussie made and a reasonable price, although i won't be buying purely on price.

Once again thankyou.
