With the High Country pretty
well being a no go zone, does anybody know of any reasonable camping spots in South Gippsland, say, south of the Prince's Highway between Morwell/Traralgon & Yarram/
Foster?
We are completely self sufficient & only need a level spot to fold out the camper trailer, preferably near a river or water of some kind.

Don't believe all you read or hear, we were at
Omeo with a group of eight vehicles for three days in late January and there is plenty to see and do. The best thing is there are NO tourists because they all listen to the news. We did some day trips out from
Omeo Caravan Park, very nice and economical park. The Coach Road,
the loop though
Falls Creek, Oriental Claims, Moscow Villa. Mark at
Omeo Caravan Park went out of his way to help us plan some day trips and it was great.
There were some fires about and there is some blackened country, but there is still loads of
places to go and things to see in the utmost safety.
We loved the town of
Omeo, you can spend a day there and the Hilltop Pub has some fairly good meals, almost an outback pub to me.
After
Omeo we headed East on the Blackmountaiun Road to McKillops
Bridge but this may be a little out of your way. Let me know if you need more info.
Chris

Thanks for the advice, but caravan, towns & pubs aren't really us.
We've camped in the Dargo/Crooked river area etc. for years & only been to the
Dargo pub twice.
I think we may have leave the CT at
home & chuck the swags in the vehicle & go look for ourselves.

Edit: 'caravan' should read 'caravan parks'

Mt Worth NP is not too far from you. Has some good walks, although a bit too busy on weekends.
Tarra-Bulga NP is a wonderful place. You can't
camp in the park, but (assuming you don't want to
camp at the Tarra Valley CP) you could pull up in a number of
places off the Grand Ridge Rd.
Nooramunga M&CP has some good quiet
bush camping spots. The Old Telegraph Rd from
Welshpool to Gelliondale is worth the drive. Good
views from
lookout hill.
Another possibility is Won Wron
State Forest, N-E of
Yarram. There is a pleasant
camping area at White Woman's
Waterhole and some interesting tracks through banksia and grass trees.
North of there, Tom's Cap and nearby Mullungdung SF are worth a visit. More
bush camping.
Holey Plains SP (between
Yarram and Rosedale) is also worthwhile. Quiet and attractive camping (with
toilets and tables) in various spots (e.g. Harrier
Swamp and Clear Water
Lake). Good birding sites too.
See Parks Vic website (www.parkweb.vic.gov.au) for info on Mt Worth, Tarra-Bulga, Nooramunga and Holey Plains. For the others, go to www.dse.vic.gov.au and go to Forests/Regional info. The info centres in towns like Traralgon,
Foster and
Yarram can also help.
