Hi everybody,
Im thinking about getting a PDA, I have DISCOVERAUST maps on my PC at
home, Will a PDA run this software as I am fairly stupid when it comes to this sort of thing! If a PDA does, what sort? pocket pc or smart phone? Inbuilt GPS or not?
I dont really need the phone option as i have a compamy phone. I thought about getting a small laptop but I only really want something small and compact.
Can anyone who is PDA literate help me on this?!?!?!
PS. Is discoveraust map software a moving one? I had it given to me a couple of days ago.
cheers
Dave

From what you are saying Discover Australia Streets and Tracks you have, and it is for Magellan proprietary GPS systems. A PDA is more likely to run Oziexplorer, Tom Tom, Destinator, and a few other systems.
if you have a Magellan GPS the software you have will work on the laptop as moving map software but has limited features.

Discoveraus streets n tracks wont run on a pda.
progs have to be written specifically for windows mobile or palm
IMO pocket pc is better and Windows mobile 5 operating system and is more pc familiar than palm.
I have an IPAQ 2790, and I have tom tom and co-pilot on it, tom tom is better.
Bought the pda as I get a pocket pc aswell as a gps system for little more money, and can keep all my data, photos, contacts etc all on one.
Agree with not wanting phone, looked at that too, but pda quality drops when you merge a phone in there.
Mine is a 600 processor and I have tom tom on a 1gb sd card, and I keep all my pics n data etc on a 4gb cf card.

It's up to you what you spend your money on , I think PDA's are not water proof so that would mean also not Bulldust proof, If you want something for maps and Navigation then Get a Garmin GPS , A Garmin Nuvi would be ideal , but if you want mapping software on the PC then get a Garmin Quest , the CD comes with it.

Does a pda need to be dustproof ???
I usually drive with my windows up and the aircon set to recirc in dusty conditions.

Words fail me , do you mean to tell me you have the A/C on and windows up 100% of the time in the outback, actually I doubt very much that you have even driven for hours in bulldust , Why would you want the A/C on and windows up on a beautiful fresh outback morning , you need to get a life and experience the real thing, feel the grit in your hair and around
the neck , and smell the dust , mate you don't know what your missing ,

Yep, yep windows up if its hot and definately up if there is dust wanting to get in the 4x4 !!!
Grit in your hair ( and teeth ?? ) isn't that what they made motorbikes for ??
Missing??? yep, missing the grit in my hair. Smell??? haven't got any anyway.
But still got good eyes, so I can still see that view from behind the tinted windows and that nice cool air con !!!!!!
What you need is a camel........he..he..

Hi Mal,
"you can load any maps via any size sd card"
Are you saying that I could still possibly use discoveraus on a pda? As Ron said above that discoveraus wont work on pda's. Or should I just stop mucking around and get Oziexplorer for a pda?
cheers

Selasticman,
Mal here is talking bout loading maps, whole different ball game to discoveraus which is a program with its own map.
Oziexplorer is the prog that you load maps to, I'm not knocking it, loads find it useful, but take a look at it first before yiou go
shell out, its no discoveraus, and I personally didnt find it user friendly at all.
Then again, tom tom wont map off road, it has dirt roads on etc but wont track in a true off road situation, like a magellan will. (although a magellan wont run word n excel either LOL!)
Really comes down to what you want out of it, if you need pc too go pda, if you already carry a laptop then pda prob money wasted.

Hi Ron,
Like you say "Really comes down to what you want out of it" is definetly the answer. From what I've seen of discoveraus, It's very good and i have also put a few trips and POI in it from previous camping trips. There seems to be abit of work behind ozi compared to discoveraus, I think I will go and do some more research to help make up my mind.
cheers,
dave
