Using the advice I received in my earlier thread PostID: 42558 I spent a long time reading through the archives

Will this solution work:

To keep my Engel running as a freezer for the 4-6 hours while I'm out fishing and my vehicle is parked at the boat ramp.

Buy an Engel Battpak and use it as a portable dual battery system in the Prado with the Battpak being charged through the rear cigarette lighter and the fridge running off the Battpak. While I'm parked at the boat ramp the fridge continues running on the Battpak but can't drain my main battery. If I don't do enough driving to keep the Battpak charged, charge it with a 240 volt battery charger at night.

Oh yeah ,

As far as ' Fishing with an Engel' I would go for the more traditional hook.

Engel fridges are a bit heavy on the cast!

As above it will work.

I have one question how much is an Engel Battpack, because a cheaper route maybe a dual battery setup in the Prado, there are alot of excellent dual battery setups for under $300 and that's including the battery.

Hi Tricatic

Read you first question to, and while I keep fridge in car
its lower down and in car centre not in back and so gets less heat.

Mine would never come close to flattening my only battery in a six
hour period, and it has its inbuilt low volts cut out anyway.

Many do have fridge in rear of wagons and its got to be the worse and hottest
place and I am wondering if you might not be better off to approach the problem
form the point of view of reducing heat build up inside the car rather than
effectivily using more battery power.

While there's lots of traditional ways to reduce heat buildup I'll
outline a different approach which might seem odd at first but works well.

I use little stick on plastic weathershields which allow windows to be
left down a little and which keep out rain without compromising security to much.

While this is useful, like those window mounted solar exhaust fans you really
need cooler air to flow in from lower down to get best effect.

A solution is to leave my cars big back doors open just a little
(1 inch), this provides a massive relief for hot air as it flows thru
car and out the windows mostly.

In my car its easy to fit a little bit of chain and lock from door catch
which limits the door opening to just a crack.

This prinicple is very effective in letting air flow thru the car whilst
providing security.

(actually did it to guarantee fresh air when sleeping in back of our Patrol)

Thanks for the replies.

I asked because before I started reading the archives yesterday I had never heard of Battery Packs/Power Pack/Thumpers. I didn't know such things existed. I started off reading the archives to see what solutions people had knocked together using a car battery, components from Dick Smiths and a soldering iron.

make your own...
get a battery case, a battery, and some cable from auto elec blokes and stick it all together.....a lot cheaper.......lots n lots cheaper

the auto sparky can assist with info on how to set up and will most likely be free if you buy neccessary bits from him.....

Yea but, it looks a cheap solution too Nudie.

The problem with most of these cases is the webbing strap that holds the lot together. Try picking the pack up by the handle and you risk leaving the bottom behind.

I believe they're only practical in a marine environment for which they were designed. (i.e. in a boat)

Tried one and it's now sitting in the back of the shed somewhere.

Just love the Blue Apple Thumper though.

Thanks for all the help and advice. We bought a Waeco Coolpower RAPS 36 for $299, it was the simplest, quickest solution.
