Can anyone suggest some good places to camp between Leigh Creek S.A. and Cameron Corner. We have a 4wd and cub off road camper trailer. We will be travelling in the area for a couple of days in mid September 2007.
Thanks Julie

We stopped here 2 years ago going to Innaminka and had it to ourselves. We made the mistake of staying on the way back too - horrible with club after club of 4x4's - that means piles of toilet paper blowing around and nowhere nice to camp. Be careful about choosing this stop - best to plan to have a look but have time to wander off again to somewher better if it's full of 'people'...............yuck!!!!!!!!!!

Happy days
George

If you're around Leigh Ck- I suggest a good camp is at Copley. Dave is a great host- and always has a good camp fire going. Nice flat areas and kept clean. Also, while there, have a kangaroo pie at the Quandong Cafe.

Quandong Cafe. Went there a few times years ago and had their spinach and fetta cheese pasties. Best I have ever had.
Life's great and it just keeps getting better

The lower Strzelecki track can be a bit bleak at times, re good camping. As I recall the last few trips, shady spots by a bit of water take a bit of finding, if the season has been harsh - and they mostly are. I usually expect to tour from around Leigh Creek up to Innamincka in one hop - I think most travellers do the same. The country you are crossing was seen as so harsh in the early days that the Cooper would have seemed to be paradise. But if you want a break, Blanchwater ruins Montecollina bore might be worth a look - if there is water in the creeks, you might snaffle a yabbie or two if you have some nets with you. Have a good 'un.....

er..... fergot to say ......Yaningurie Waterhole (part of the lower Strzelecki creek watercourse - just a bit south of where the creek crosses the track may have water in it - not sure about shade but)..... the crossing point itself may have shade too. There are Trek notes here on this site by Michelle too - covering the stretch above Mt Hopeless.

Ah yes...been there. A faint track leads to it just after you have crossed Strzelecki Creek from the north. Off road about 1km. Cross over a bit of a rise and there is a camp spot near a water hole with either water or nothing in it...lol

Back in 2001 we were with a group of 5 vehicles travelling from Innamincka to Lyndhurst. It was very wet and heavy going. Somewhere about 80 km shy of Lyndhurst one of the CTs did a wheel bearing just as we were crossing a creek bed. We were forced to camp nearby for the night whilst repairs were carried out, as it was already late in the day. We camped beside the creek bed amongst 6 fott high bushes that line the creek beds on the South Western side about 150 meters off the Strezelecki Track. I just can't recall the name of the particular creek, but there are many of them (all similar) that lead North from the Flinders Ranges and cross the track. Check the map for the names of these. Due to the hard going we were unsure of making it to Lyndhrst with our (then) 85 litre tank, so added a 20 litre gerry can of fuel and actually made it to Leigh Creek to refuel.

On my map, it could have been the Clayton River but more like the Yerelina creek that you speak of (about 80k up) - as recalled, the crossings way down there on the Strz can be wooded and bushy in a good season, but as you go north the harsh outback takes hold ! Still - for mine its lovely country to tour through - don't know about earning a living up there but, over the 12 months of the year.
