That doesn't look like much fun.....would be nice to have a little more information other than the zinc levels due to the
mine (?)...hope it doesn't get into any of the swimmng holes up here!
Cheers Andrew

I'll put my hand up as being less than informed in this area. How does high levels of zinc etc co rellate with this bacteria ?
Whatever the cause, definately naaastee stuff.

Footie ,
Some bacteria actually "eat" metals . That's how they sometimes seperate gold from other elements - by using a method called bio-leaching .
Maybe the elements put into the river have encouraged the growth of a type of bacteria , that under some conditions, also attacks flesh .
YUK .

Thanks, Willie I didn't know that. So if they have bacteria eating metals , it possibly mutates into the nastee stuff ?
If it eats metals then its no wonder that bits of you can fall off after an encounter...imagine the possibilities...ouch !

Hmm... Just had to withdraw from our annual northern fishing trip. We usually go to Manangoora, this year the boys opted for King Ash bay (McArthur R.)
Perhaps there is an omen there.
Thing is, why are we only hearing about this now when it has been known about for so long?

Hi Furph,
Why the change from Manangoora? I am heading that way in a few weeks and was planning on checking out both spots. Should hit the area in mid April. Hard to get much info on Manangoora though.
Any info you are able to share on Manangoora would be greatly appreciated.

Back in 1998 the bridge over the
Adelaide River in the NT partially sank/collapsed when a road train went over it. They found the silt around the pylons had corroded them (I think from memory) about 10 times faster than had been expected. Crocs don't seem to mind it though!
There is also a flesh eating bacteria (don't know if they are related) that lives just below the surface of dirt up there that can do similar things. Not sure if it has ever been fatal or not though.

Interesting the ABC quote the metal levels but make sure they don't mention any link between the two?

Yes a lot of journo's seem to put two statements adjacent to one another without stating a link.....I suppose they have to protect themselves from lawsuit etc.....or they may use it to sensationalize a story or beat their own drum a little (certainly not our impartial ABC LOL)

I was at King Ash Bay in 2004 and was told to ware shoes and to avoid walking barefoot in the area by the guy that runs the
general store. He said there was a flesh eating bacteria in the area.
I know it's not good for tourism, but why was there no literature posted anywhere by the authorities ?
In NSW a government body would more than certainly be held liable if this resulted in someones death !

Fortunately I wasn't born yesterday, The guy was deadly serious and was backed up by a few other people I asked , even the service station attendant.
Then again they could all be scare mongers I suppose !

They said it was a bacteria in the soil and there was a NT Health bulletin sheet of some sort that the attendant produced from behiond the counter when I brought up the topic.

Interesting stuff. Sounds like it's been around for a long time. The only difference is I now know about it.
Think I'll still head up there for our fishing trip. Wouldn't be going in the water anyway. Just be even more careful now.
