THE Alpine town of Licola, hit hard by recent bushfires, has been battered with flash flooding and mudslides.

A State Emergency Service spokesman said the storm on Friday sent floodwaters rushing through the town, pushing cars up against trees and leaving a 30cm layer of mud in homes and businesses.

Resident Ralph Barraclough told how he feared he would die when his vehicle was washed away by floodwaters.

"The waters were three metres high in some places -- it was pretty frightening," he said.

Floodwater combined with ash from the recent bushfires to create a thick slush that washed off the surrounding hills into the township.

The SES spokesman said one home was destroyed after being lifted off its stumps and three others were badly damaged.

The township was barely recovering from the bushfires in December and January, which left surrounding hills blackened and bare.

The owner of the Licola general store, Ray Winter, said the flooding took residents by surprise.

"It's come through the whole town," he said.

"It's just left debris, it looks like a tsunami has come through the joint."

G'day Truckster
Yes, this happened about 10 days ago. Footage from there looked horrendous.
From my understanding, several 4WD clubs and individuals are doing a run up there in the next week or so to rebuild fences and in general clean-up. A great way to be an Aussie.
