Gday all done a check on fuel consuption on the 03 patrol td 42 6cyl intercooled turbo deisel and towing a 17 foot pop top van getting around 6km to the litre
however the 03 has just clocked 15000km and have been told she will improve soon the check was done mostly at night which we cruised at around 90 km
the run home was a bit quicker sat around 105 / 110 and used about 15 lt more
although she does a fine job of dragging the van fuel use seems a little high to me
any simalar set ups fuel use would be much apreciated
oh yer shes a stock standard set up at this point CHEERS

Get a 3" exhaust bent up from the turbo back- big difference. Also look at getting your pump timing checked and air fuel ratios. this will help your fuel consumption a lot. Cheers

When we are towing our van, 18ft6 full van, we get about 5.5 klm/litre, speed about 100km. We have a 99GU 4.2TD

Seems par for the course towing any reasonable sized van. We have the 3 litre, and average around 5 km / litre towing a fully sized heavy van, driving 90 - 100. We get around 7 - 7.75 not towing. We have compared notes with people using various types of tow vehicles for heavy vans, and all get roughly similar, except for a few people who seem to be able to work (or quote) miracles.

Hi Barney, I have a 04 4.2 td cab chassis with 3" system and whilst not towing , have a slide on camper ,all up weight 3.5 tn and averaged 7.2 over 25000km not counting the first 15000km run in. Usually travel 90-95 occassional 110. Fair bit of off road stuff in that as well.

Hello Motherhen,

Just curious about your 7 - 7.5 km/litre? We have just finished a 6,100k trip into NSW and across to the Alice and back with our GU III 3.0 manual. The vehicle was loaded to 2.98 tonnes (weighbridge, no trailer). We were mostly cruising between 90 -120 kph as the conditions allowed. Below are our fuel figures.

Km Miles l/100km km/l mpg Fill points
435.6 272.25 10.10 9.90 28.10 Caltex - Devonport
845.1 528.19 11.14 8.97 25.46 Shell - Broken Hill
395.3 247.06 12.13 8.24 23.38 Ampol - Oodla Wirra
327.6 204.75 11.42 8.75 24.84 Shell - Pimba
365.6 228.50 11.23 8.90 25.27 Ampol - Coober Pedy
688.4 430.25 11.28 8.87 25.16 Woolworths - Alice Springs
486.5 304.06 13.52 7.39 20.98 Woolworths - Alice Springs Heavy 4WDing
338.1 211.31 12.29 8.14 23.10 Woolworths - Alice Springs
686.1 428.81 13.20 7.58 21.50 Ampol - Coober Pedy
528.9 330.56 13.88 7.20 20.44 Shell - Port Augusta
311.4 194.63 12.54 7.97 22.63 BP - Adelaide
703.8 439.88 12.41 8.06 22.87 BP - Allansford
414.5 259.06 10.41 9.60 27.25 Shell - Westgate North
The heavy 4wding was to the easy of Arltunga, through a 4WD Adventure trail (took over 5 hours to cover 100 km, all low range work). That's a trip average of 8.42 km/l. Around town I am regularly getting 8.7km/l. We haven't done any serious towing yet, so I can't comment there.

How does this compare to other 3.0 GU's ?

Cheers,

Peter

Hi Peter - you're doing very well then. I only did a couple of tests on it when we got it (it was not loaded at the time), generally on a long trip rather than the short running that is part of its life at home, so expect we would be getting worse overall. Ours is auto. I have not ever considered use of the air conditioner which may be a variable factor.

In 2003 we towed a small wind up van. I didn't keep the same kind of records, but probably got around 6 kms, travelling around 110 when on the main roads, a bit slower on the rough stuff.

In 2004 we raced to Qld to pick up the Bushtracker, and averaged 7.65, travelling generally fairly fast. On the way back towing (mostly around 110 - 120) 4.83 kms.

2005 and 2006 i kept fairly good records, and different fuel fills give rather different readings, but overall, during the past two years trips we have averaged 5 kms.

Hi B.R.
That's about normal for that engine, won't get much better I'm afraid, the 3" dump, exhaust and tune up will give about 20% more power but won't do squat for your economy.
