Does anyone have any recommendations on rear window covers to protect against stones while towing a camper trailer and where to purchase them from...

We are about to head off on a 14 week trip around Oz and think we might need one.

Easy to make - member Willem made some for us from materials on hand. Get some of that heavy duty clear plastic (Spotlight sell it) and some self adhesive Velcro - Velcro brand stands up to the heat better than cheaper alternatives. Cut to shape of window and stick in place with tabs of Velcro. Will cost yo next to nothing.

I'll go along with Richard on this one.

I also have an Obie's Outback screen saver (2 pieces for the Jack).

I cannot understand why people bugger about with el-cheapo solutions, unless it is a one off trip. The cost of the Obie's is around $200 and saves something like $1500+ if you bust the big window. I was "lucky" when I broke my window as the Insurance Company covered the cost of replacement. Sure was inconvenient at the time though. I was in the Birdsville/Innamincka region.
Bought the Obie's very soon after that incident.

The only thiing I have changed from standard is to replace the strips of Velcro (on the vehicle glass borders) to Velcro spots (22mm). This was to eliminate the expansion/contracting I experienced with the strips over 6 months or so.
Have had the spots permanently on the Windows for over two years now without any evident problems.

I left the original strips of Velcro attached to the Screen Saver. The screen saver is not exposed to the weather like the vehicle's Window glass is.
I found the original strips expand and contract over a period of time and not only look bad, but lose their adhesion too.

The spots (22mm) have a smaller cross section and I have not had one come off A yet.

Nothing special about the loop & hook Spots, although they are genuine VELCRO® brand. Available in most larger Hardware stores. Bunnings have them.

Eventually, I may replace the whole lot and reverse the hook and loop setup, so that the softer "loop" material is on the vehicle.

Hi RovingOz

That's a nice looking bit of gear you have in your rig pick.

How to you fined the strap type mirrors?

I have the clip on type and even with a brace they are useless

Regards

Richard

And by the way I did brake the rear window in the Prado just outside of Birdsville

The aussie truck mirrors are very good, nothing moves.

Mine was very cheap in fact no cost at all and done the job, I used opened beer cartons taped on with 100mph tape ,and when not needed just rip it off , of course if you want to see you could go buy some clear perspex , it can be obtained ftom Bunnings in small sheets and different thickness , just one of about 2mm would do the job and once again tape it on

Ditto. I use a large windscreen sunshade secured with race tape (cloth duct) plus a stoneguard on the CT.

Ditto, to Doug T, all we used was the carton of the VB box with 100mm tape, and it worked a treat for 6 weeks in outback SA,QLD and NSW.

Coreflute (the stuff real-estate signs are made from) is also readily available, cheap, able to be cut to size and works well with velcro fastenings.

Been a few postings lately on www.capertrailers.org yahoo forum.

Site Link

For the rear window itself, the beer carton, to perspex fixed with suction cups or the rear louvre tabs, to bought items.

Or stone screens and all sorts of ideas to deflect stones down from the front of the trailer.

We made our own from a product similar to perspex called Tuffex - from a perspex supplier - made a pattern (we have an odd shape rear window) - cut it out with jigsaw - stuck it with velcro - but only buy the Velcro brand - the cheaper ones have inferior adhesive qualities - Spotlight have Velcro brand - 25mm wide is ok - cost us about $60 all up - another thing to remember is not to leave it on when you are just parking for a while especially in the heat - the glue will soften in the sun and your cover will slide off - you may not notice it till it's gone. We did this, of course, after we broke the rear window on a big trip - typical isn't it?
Enjoy your trip.
